Advice on Returning Household Bins to Supplier

Hi

Looking for a bit of advise on returning my bins to my provider. I recently moved from Dublin City Council to another provider as their offer seemed quite good. They also offered "one month free" which seemed good to me too. However, although i don't have a problem with their service, i want to return to Dublin City Council, my only reason being, that the council come and go before i leave for work in the morning, and this crowd don't come until 3 in the afternoon meaning i have to leave my bin sitting outside all day which i don't like to do.
I rang my current supplier who said that yes they can pick up the bins but i would own them the "one free month" back - i asked why that would be and she said it's given as a "goodwill gesture" for you to remain with them and if i leave then i "have to pay them back". I have checked their website and see it stated nowhere where this was part of the terms and conditions nor did the salesman tell me of this.
I don't see why i should have to pay it - there is no rental charge on their bins so i suppose i could just keep their bins but never use them but in fairness i don't really want to do that as they take up room!!

It's only 25euro, but am i within my rights not to pay seeing as it states nowhere about this (nowhere that i can see anyway!!)
 
nope, only signed to say i was interested in it but nothing else, didn't get a copy of it. got a few bits in the post from them including a top up card but again it says nowhere about repaying them the "free month".

I'd write them a letter cancelling your service with immediate effect and requesting that they collect the bins from you before a set date and that if they don't collect them you'll start charging storage at €5 per day. Of course you won't do this but it might get them moving. If they raise the issue again of you paying for the 'free' month ask them to send you a copy of the contract you signed that states the 'free' month is to be paid for in the event of cancellation.

To be fair to them it sounds reasonable to say that if you cancel within, for example, 12 months, you forfeit the intro offer. However, this needs to be made clear at the time of signing, even if the print is very small.
 
I would have thought that wherever it was stated that you get the first month free, any terms about cancelling would be in the same place.

Was it told to you verbally about the free month? If so, then I think you should probably pay the months fee, as they did provide you with a service.
