Do you think you could create a Dinner for Two People for €7.50 or less?

Your challenge if you choose to accept it is to purchase all of the ingredients for a dinner for two, spending no more than €7.50.

You can use Herbs, Spices, Salt, Sugar or Cooking Oil that you have at home, but that's it. Anything else you have to account for out of your €7.50.

The best meal will receive a €20 book token.

To collect your prize you'll need to produce the receipt showing your purchases,

This is limited to registered AAM members (so we can Private Message the winner to arrange swapping of receipt for token etc).

Do we have a panel of judges. Is the meal 2 courses, 3 courses?

Terms And Conditions

1. The competition is open to all registered members of
AskAboutMoney.com. This includes Moderators,
but not members of the highly quallified (but yet to be
named, judging panel).

2. Closing Date for posting Entries is November 22nd.

3. The meal can consist of as many or as few courses as
you see fit.

4. The goods must be purchased in a Supermarket.
(Mc Donalds is not allowed).

5. Herbs, Spices, Salt, Sugar, and Cooking Oil can be used
and are not inlcuded in the price.

6. Where an item can be used for more than one meal, e.g.
a Bag of Rice, the entire cost of the Rice is included in the
€7.50.

7. The cost of any drink to be consumed with the meal e.g.
Milk, Wine, Cider etc, must be included in the €7.50

8. Only one entry is allowed per registered user.

9. To collect the €20 gift voucher you must provide a valid
receipt showing the items purchased (including Plastic Bag
Tax). The total cost must be equal to or less than €7.50

10. You may avail of Coupons, Special Offers or Cash Back
offers in order to reduce your cost. The actual Cost to
you must not exceed €7.50

11. The winner will be announced on this thread and will be
contacted by Private Message to arrange delivery of the
Book Token.

12. You may purchase any cooking implements that you need.
This is not included in the €7.50

Can butter be used instead of or in conjunction with cooking oil?

I presume administrators are not excluded? Is the boss allowed to enter?

I think to add more of a challenge... the number of courses SHOULD be set... one course is too easy!

It should be a 2 course dinner (main course + dessert) with purchase of some sort of a drink for the two people (water NOT allowed)... to try and squeeze all that into €7.50 WOULD be a challenge.

One final point - I assume reduced food due to being close to the sell-by date is permitted. Tesco, Dunnes and Iceland often have these offers. Doh, have a given the game away.

Does all the food really have to be purchased in a supermarket? Or do you just mean food shop? I rarely buy any fruit or veg in a supermarket, prefer to use local greengrocers. Interesting challenge if it's two course - must go and dig out that Aldi-dente book I got.

Like the idea, to level the playing field though, would we not have to verify the prices paid?

Here's my best effort for the moment.

I like to call it..."pain a la haricots au lard"!

Ingredients:
One can of beans (any brand, but preferably Heinz) - less than a euro.
Four slices of bread - bread is a little more than a euro (I think).
Butter - about a euro.

Preparation:
Place beans in bowl and insert into microwave. Nuke for approx two minutes until beans start to bubble.
Place bread in toaster and toast until golden brown.

Place toast on large plate.
Butter thoroughly.
Selectively pour beans around the toast- making sure to cover toast well.

It's one of those worldwide book tokens right? I don't want to be limited to just one shop like!

Spendthrift! Large sliced pan in Aldi is about €0.40! :lol

So, if I have accumulated €8 in Tesco vouchers, my meal costs nothing, I must therefore win?

This doesn't seem really fair. I think vouchers should be excluded for the purposes of this challenge.

Marion - it's not the lowest cost that wins (I presume), so while getting the meal for free may be a good point, it simply satisfies one of the criteria -that the totalcost be under €7.50.

Coupons, Vouchers, and Other Questions

I didn't specify a set number of courses, because It's the overall meal that counts. You might think it's worth skipping dessert for a fantastic main course.

Marion, if you can get a free meal with €8 or more of vouchers etc, you'll be well up the list on the value for money score. But how will the actual quality of the meal hold up. You're up against beans on toast, it's not going to be easy.

I think we have a volunteer to join the Judging Panel.

That's fine, in fact it's probably better quality for the same or less money so, bonus points.
I was just trying to rule out the temptation to suggest a Big Mac Meal. Or the temptation to come up with a meal and buy a bag of chips from the local chipper to go with it.

Some of the Asian Markets are also worth a look.

You'll never get over there and back and get a meal for less than €7.50 ..... unless hmmm ... Rya nah.
