A Toilet Problem

Our loo appears to be blocked. The water rises almost to the top on flushing. Are there any products that can be used to unblock this? We live in a bungalow.

You need to trace the waste pipe outside the house, there should be several shore covers leading to the main pipe which can be removed with a screwdriver. Once you locate the blockage , probably at a bend in the pipe(corner) you might to be some rods to try and clear the blockage. If this does not work call the professionals, expensive though

Looks like you need to get unblocking rods (woodies) and get the hands dirty. There is a blockage somewhere. Should be manholes around your house. You will have to unblock a section at a time until you clear it all. Messy.

Have you a septic tank or are you connected to the mains ?

There are two possible causes for the blockage. Did you have one of those clip on toilet freshener things on the rim/ did it fall into the pan? Or perhaps a hairbrush or someother object like that? Go out into the garden and find the nearest AJ (access junction) to the soil pipe. Lift the cover and get an assistant to flush the toilet. If the water is flowing clearly in the AJ then there is probably a blockage in the actual trap of the toilet. You can try and remove it/ shift it using a coat hanger doubled over. If the AJ and pipework in the garden is blocked get some drain rods and rod the drain, prefereably from two ends of the pipe run. Chances are the drain is blocked with grease and fat from the kitchen sink/ dishwasher. When flowing again treat with caustic soda and try to avoid poring fat or gease in the drain.

Yeah baby toys and nappies can block things for sure. Measure the distance between access junctions and the toilets and septic tank before you go to buy the rods to ensure you get enough. Its a terrible job if the pipes are completely backed up but otherwise you should clear it no problem.

had the same problem recently, flushed and it rose to meet me!

the cat had knocked the toilet roll of the cistren into the bowl, it had blocked it up, hold you breath and plunge you arm into the mush and woosh it was cured
Hardest part was boiling your forearm aftwards

Well to be honest it's not a pleasant job, but look on the bright side:) at least you know where that stuff has been! Your local hardware shop will stock heavy duty nitrile rubber gloves which have long gauntlets so you should be well protected!

The same shop where you can buy gloves will most likely sell you a plunger as well! Tried various methods one time, but a plunger for a straightforward blockage was the way to go.
