A late night of free cultural events on Fri 21st September

Thanks Sue Ellen, it's such a shame the web-site for the regional events is such an appalling mess, technically and from a design perspective. The two sections of the Kilkenny one consist of a single static graphic object each with text that is too small for me to read. An infuriating mess for such an important event.

I was away in limerick last weekend, There was a festival on in the city I was interested in and on the Saturday had planned to spend an hour arts/crafts for children as advertised on brochure and internet. Imagine our shock when we arrive to find it was advertised an hour later than it started. A handful of children were at the event as we had a quick chat with the art teacher. Alot of families/children turned away. I had even been chatting to a volunteer early that morning and got the actual brochure off him, no mention of mistake etc.

I like to use the evening to attend venues which are not often open to the public. Here are some I particularly enjoyed in previous years

No 63 - St Mary's Abbey - an "underground" Cistercian Abbey

No 13 - 15 Usher's Island - The setting for James Joyce's short story Dubliners

No 153 - Lios na nóg - Cullenswood House where Patrick Pearse founded St Enda's

No 67 - Na Píobairí Uilleann - 15 Henrietta Street

Brendan, is it obvious which things are open all the time, and which are a one off? I will be going in to Dublin with three kids, 8, 7 and 4. They went last year, it was way past their bedtime, but they seemed to enjoy it and want to go this year, it could be that staying up past bedtime is the highlight! Because of this we won't get to much stuff, and it's only a few hours, but seeing things that aren't open often sounds good...

There are places like the wax muesem and Dublinia that are free on culture night, that might be of interest to young children.

Yes, we were going to Dublinia last year, but it got late and we went into Christchurch for a looksee instead. They have a sheet where you have to find things in the church that are on the sheet and the kids thought this was the best thing ever! They really enjoyed Christchurch, wasn't expecting that. It's nice to be surprised though!

Did anyone go in on Friday night?
There was a nice atmosphere around Dublin Castle and Chester Beatty Library but overall I think it is becoming a victim of it's own success. There were huge queue's to get into things and it is probably worth spreading over a weekend.

I saw huge queues on College Green, so I presume that they were for the wax museum. OK, it's free entry, but they could have gone to other places not open.

I went to a house in Mountjoy Square, but it was not open?

I went to Na Piobaraí Uilleann and listened to some uilleann pipes.

it is probably worth spreading over a weekend.

Good idea.

Booking opened yesterday for Open House Dublin where you can get to visit buildings which are not usually open to the public e.g. Liberty Hall and Donnybrook Garage.

Brendan, thanks for that link.
I see they have a junior section on it for kids events.
