A dog (lab) with sore ears

Hello, Ive noticed marks on the very tips of my dogs ears. I just noticed them last night its on the exact same plaice on both ears - exactly on the tip at the end, the buit that go over his eyes. It looks like a bite but or a scald there are scabs on them now - but before I noticed them last night I had seen him rub his front paws down over his eyes (Im thinking now maybe t was his ears he was trying to get at.

He doesnt have canker in his ears or anything and he is in great form I just noticed this last night as I rubbed his ears - a little lump at the tip of his ears. Its tiny and Im not sure if it warrants a trip to the vet as it causing him no discomfort.

Any ideas??
 
Surely you should bring him to the vet just in case? Just because it's not causing pain doesn't mean that it might not be serious.
 
Ya I know. Its just the last time I brought him i felt a bit silly as he had a cough and I think the vet thought i was fussing. Hes an out and about dog.

If your vet was dismissive of you acting responsibly regarding your pet's health then perhaps you should find another one who appreciates the business and the fact that you are looking after your pet?
 
Living on a farm, I think the vet appreciates good animal husbandry as I do myself. I know what your saying though. But I have to say my vet is first class and I suppose he knows Iwould have a history with animals and because this dogs was unwell as a pup he's only trying to reassure me.

Various minor dermatological problems with dogs/cats ears are fairly common - but do go to a vet, and as ClubMan suggested, try another vet if you feel your current one is unsympathetic.
 
So maybe give the vet a casual call and see if he would deign to examine the animal in this case?
 
My opinion would be to hang on a few days before going to the vet! Stick some sudocream on the ends and keep an eye that the sores arent getting bigger or spreading! Is he a long eared dog? He could be stepping on them when eating or rubbing them off the ground and its simply a self inflicted injury! I generally dont go to the vet for every little thing..try some home remedies first, keep an eye on where his ears go when eating etc and if the problem is still persisting in a few days then bring him in!
 
I have to say I would never use any human creams/cures on a dog - they could have a bad effect and my own vet informed me that they can do more harm then good. My mams lab had a similar complaint and if memory serves it turned out to be an alergic reaction - the dog needed anti inflam medication. If you want to clean out any sores etc you should only use salt and luke warm water - nothing else!
 
You should see a vet about this - it could be that your dog has a skin condition - if your dog is insured you can claim back on the fees.
 
Labs are suceptible to ear mites which could cause this. No big deal but they can be very irritating for the poor guy. The scabs may be beacuse he was scratching his ears against a wall or something.

I hope it's nothing more serious but a quick trip to the vet should confirm the cause either way.

What companies provide pet insurance in Ireland ? Are Allianz the only ones ?

Quite alot of animal medicines and remedies are actually human products rebranded and dont forget tested on animals alot of the time so id have no qualms using these on my dog e.g.sudocream!Within reason of course, no prescription drugs etc It may well be an allergy but i wouldnt go running to the vet for every little ailment that shows up! Wait a few days and if it is getting worse and still persisting then go!
 
Hey thanks all you can be quite sure that this same dog is well looked after , to be honest I thought myself that he was poking his head into somthing and came out the worst but i was puzzeled that it was in the same spot on the two ears and that is why I posted. After all the posts Im thinking it may be a mite and if so I will get it treated of course and promptly.
I dont have insurance but I will look into it - If people have it there is no reason he shouldnt.

Hi there,
Allianz I am afraid is the only company in Ireland that provides pet insurance. Its not that bad - I pay €15 per month for our pure bred and €11 pm for the mutt.
It is all interest free as well.

Just as a note..ear mites are generally found in the ear canal and not externally, in case you buy ear mite treatment! Other skin mites (demodex, sarcoptes etc) are a different kettle of fish and require different treatment!
 
Other than a bit of tepid water there is no way I would put anything on his ears, without the vets say so. And if it looks like they are healing (because he turns out he scraped them off somthing - I will leave him alone - but I will watch him) I would nearly look after him better than I do myself!!
