Having worked for my employer for 8 years nearly and it being a very technical company with "few" employees in my area of expertise, it has been decided recently the directorship would like to upgrade my contract of employment to include a 6 month notice period which I would have to give should I wish to leave (working the other way around presumably should they wish to terminate me also)

Now I cannot help thinking signing a 6 month period would severely limit my options in the future should other opportunities arise, and also I do not see them having to terminate me on 6 months as of nearly as much benefit to me as the company would gain?

Thoughts also are that in future, pay rises and bonuses could more easily/conveniently be withheld due the the sheer difficulty I would face leaving hence still encourage staying!

So I guess what I need to know is what sort remuneration should I be expecting/ask for with this sort of guaranteed term?
Is it even normal for employers to do this?
Should I sign?

I would not assume they would give you 6 monhs notice if the shoe in on the other foor- so if you want this you will need to get it written into the contract.

Very hard to say how much money but I'd say 10% settle for 6% and ask for an extra weeks holidays.

Well it was implied that 6 months could be given either way, I will have to read the contract thoroughly of course when it is given to me, 10% pay seems somewhat low for that potential hardship which I do see as life affecting should thing come to it. I guess without even that there would be NO incentive to sign at all really? So why should I!
