surcharge warning to those who missed tax deadline

Close to 400,000 people met last Thursday's deadline to electronically file a tax return and pay the tax due online, Revenue said.

That was the deadline for filing the Revenue Online Service (ROS). On the day, some 58,000 returns were filed online.

Some 90pc of those who filed on time used the ROS system, a spokeswoman for Revenue said.

Around 550,000 people are thought to have been due to have self-assessed their taxes and file a return and make payments to Revenue.

So 150,000 or 27% missed the deadline and now are liable to fines of 5% of the overall tax due, or 10% if they are more than two months late.
