Some 444 jobs are to be created in Dublin’s Dundrum Town Centre by November, it was revealed today.

Two new retail wings will open within the shopping facility, which has welcomed 52 million visitors since opening in 2005.

The Dundrum South section has attracted high street names such as Hughes and Hughes and Elvery Sports, while the Pembroke District wing will be home to Gant and Hamleys toy store as well as new food halls.

Nine of the 14 new retailers are setting up shop in Ireland for the first time.

A jobs fair will take place at the centre on Friday to recruit new employees, and representatives from the House of Fraser, Harvey Nichols, Marks & Spencer and Tesco will be attending.

Dundrum Town Centre director Don Nugent attributed the success of the facility to its mix of tenants, extended trading hours, weather-proof shopping and easy parking and transport access.

“We continue to attract new tenants and Irish retail firsts to the centre, which highlights retailers’ confidence in the Irish retail market,” he said.

“It is this same assurance that has led to the creation of a further 444 jobs, which will be coming into effect over the coming weeks.”

Attending today’s launch, Tánaiste and Enterprise Minister Mary Coughlan said the new jobs were reflective of continued growth in the retail sector.

“Retail plays an important role in the Irish economy with around 200,000 people – almost one in 10 of the workforce – employed in shops.

“The last few years have seen rapid sales growth in the retail sector. In real terms, the volume of retail sales grew by almost 6% per year between 2005 and 2007, a rate of growth without parallel in any other economy in the euro area,” she said.

“While the period ahead will be challenging, today’s announcement reflects confidence in the continued growth in this important sector,” she added.

Dundrum Town Centre opened its doors in March 2005 with 15 first-time retailers in Ireland, including Harvey Nichols, House of Fraser, H&M and Massimo Dutti.

The facility has since won 25 national and international awards including the Global RLI International Shopping Centre 2006 and the ICSC European Shopping Centre 2007.

Dundrum Town Centre was also awarded the Parents Choice Most Family Friendly Centre in 2007 and Most Child Friendly Centre in 2006.
