2nd storey to Bungalow

We've bought a 20yr old bungalow that is livable but the rooms are small. We need to extend backwards or upwards to give ourselves enough space. We won't be there while the work is being done.

I would prefer to build upwards (preferably 2nd storey but would live with dormer). I would prefer to keep the garden space for playing. DH thinks it would be cheaper to extend.

Is there really a massive saving by staying on the ground!? I know you'd need lots of detail to give an informed opinion but I'm just wondering generally.

We're going to get a builder & structural engineer to have a look at it over the next week or so but I don't want to have my heart set on a 2nd storey if it's going to be extra extra expensive!
