I've got 20K to invest for the long term. I've read the guide to savings and investments where
it says that buying shares directly is the best long term investment. I noticed that this
was written in 2002, does it still apply for 2007.

Depends - there could be strong arguments in favour or a low charges managed or index tracking unit linked fund or an ETF.
