Hi all,
I am a civil servant and my fortnightly wages are 1723.58 making my net in 2010 1209euro per forthnight. My net in 2011 is 1130 per forthnight. I rang salaries and they didnt give me any assistance really. It just seems an awful lot to be down. My friend is on similiar wages and is down 53 euro per forthnight.
If anyone could help I d really appreciate it.
thanks
Majella

Thanks Billo,
I looked at that thread and according to the calculator should be down approx 26 per week. When I rang salaries they told me the usc is calculated over the 14 days of which I was paid (even though this covers the last week of Dec, first week Jan). The big difference seems to be on my paye. I paid 70 euro more this payslip. Any further help much appreciated.

Thanks but I have checked that other thread already and have posted a reply. I would appreciate any help on this as from the calculator on the link provided I should be down around 26 pw. ??

the pension cut should only apply for the January part so your gross might be the same as last paycheck with a Pension deduction taken out along with the USC .However, they are taking the new tougher Paye calculations and the USC from the full amount ,even the portion that belongs to Dec
if i had the amount of fortnightly tax credit you had for the last two paychecks i could probably work out if they,ve made a mistake or not in your last one

I wonder is the big drop the OP'S net pay mostly to do with the USC.

Were you by any chance exempt from either the income levy or the health levy in 2010 but now have to pay both under the new USC? For instance, are you a medical card holder, a widow or for whatever reason pay PRSI at class A2? This might explain why your work colleague seems to have suffered less of a reduction.

The only other possible explanation I can think of is if there is a tax credit that you were entitled to in 2010 that no longer applies in 2011 because of a change in circumstances.

it doesn't really matter if a portion of the pay was earned in Dec 2010, its the tax laws that are in force when you are being paid that apply so therefore the USC is liable for the whole amount.

thanks for your help. I asked a friend of mine to look over my payslip. She compared it with my Dec payslip. Turns out I was getting additional credit in 2010 as i was on maternity leave (plus unpaid mat leave for 3 mths). I am actually down 51 euro a forthnight but am down 80 in reality.
Thanks for all yer help. I am clueless with the whole tax thing
