Hi all.

Can only take 2 weeks hols this summer and want to do S America. Any recommendations / itineries ? Also, is it rain season for some seasons etc. Would love a combination of cities and trekking with scenery.

Thanks in advance!

2 weeks is very short, so my advice would be to pick one country and choose an itinerary in that country that allows you to see as many of the sights as possible without giving the effect of being a "drive thru" holiday.

A few of us went to Peru for 3 weeks in 2005 and had best of intentions to get into Bolivia as well. As it turned out 3 weeks gave us just enough time to do a great trip within Peru but we still hadn't covered about a 10th of that country.

Look at trailfinders and other tour operators that do south american itineraries and try model your own 2 week one on theirs?

Summer will be their Winter so it depends on what sort of weather you are looking for. Bolivia would be cold but a great cultural experience. You could visit La Paz and Sucre and the Salt Plains where it would all be cold weather but then to the East of Bolivia is a jungle region where it meets the amazon, it would be warm weather here and you can do jungle trekking and the most dangerous bike ride in the world.
Brazil would be good if you wanted good weather, bear in mind that Brazil is huge though and you may not see a lot in 2 weeks. You could stay in the south and go to Rio and Florianopolis or head north to Salvador and Belem.

Hi,

you wont be able to "do" south america in 2 weeks - its a huge continent!

I'd say, pick one country and dont try to squeeze too much in :
If you want amazing scenery and indigenous culture, I'd recommend Bolivia (salt lakes, volcanoes, amazon jungle).
If you'd prefer somewhere more european-ized try Argentina (Buenos Aires, and trip to the pampas, wine regions, polo matches, tango, iguassu falls etc).
If you're into hiking try Chile (hike the andes, and the national parks in patagonia are beautiful, Santiago is also a nice city) or Peru (macchu pichu etc).

Enjoy!

Would recommend Peru, spent 2 weeks there last year. Went with GAP Adventures, . This trip included Lake Titicaca, Amazon Jungle and the Inca Trail. Didn't get to Arequipa, Colcyn Canyon or Nazca Lines which would take about another 4-5 days to cover.

Highlight of the trip most definitely was the Inca Trail, you hike for 4 days over the Andes and on the last day you reach the lost city of the Incas, Macchu Picchu at sunrise (well you are supposed to see it at sunrise but it was really foggy that morning and missed that view; it did clear up a couple of hours later and we got to see the place but that once in a life time chance of seeing it at sunrise was gone). You do not have to be superfit to do this; as long as you used to plenty of walking you will be fine. What makes it difficult is the altitude which doesn't discrimminate between hiking abilities.

Thanks everyone...heard about Gap Adventures from someone else so will check that out.

Good w/e
