€20k to invest - where to put it?

I have a €20k lump sum that i'm planning to invest.

I'm looking to invest it for minimum of 1 year - but possibly 3-5 years or more depending.

I would like to spread it between low-risk and medium-risk options.

Was thinking of low-risk portion to go on Irish shares e.g. CRH, Kingspan and Anglo Irish Bank - just because recent media coverage indicates good prospects.

For medium-risk, not sure. Something in energy? Buy shares in 1 or 2 companies, or go for a fund? Other options?

many similar questions have been answered many times in many other threads
please do some searching

and we dont discuss individual shares here.

what I can add is a warning,
NEVER TRUST THE MEDIA COVERAGE ON PROSPECTS

listen to their view, analyze how their previous "advice" turned out,
if they end up being wrong, they have a load of prepared manufactured convenient excuses!

do your own research

As above but also if you are looking for low risk then you probably should consider something other than individual shares - e.g. a more diversified low charges unit linked fund or an ETF or something. Bear in mind that less than 5 years is arguably a bit short an investment timeframe for equities but it also depends on your overall situation, attitude to risk/volatility etc.
