Just wondering whats the best month to start planting up hanging baskets etc? also any tips for a 1st timer?

My window box and one hanging basket (protected from frost by the door canopy) have been planted up with Lidl Primulas/Polyanthuses for several weeks now and are fine. The Aldi trailing Begonia will be going up as soon as frost has passed. I'm sure that there are loads more specialist gardening websites that can give you much better tips.

[broken link removed]website/forum might help with advice.

Hope you don't experience the same nice people who like to collect hanging baskets and solar lights from gardens in our estate :(

Is that a case of (drunken?) high jinks or kids messing (or both!) or people actually nicking the stuff to reuse or sell?

Organised gangs drive around estates during the day admiring the baskets. They return in a van in the middle of the night and clean out all the hanging baskets. They are only in each house for a few seconds and can be in and out of an estate/road in a few minutes. Even if they were seen doing it, by the time the resident gets to the phone and makes the call to the Gardai, they wouldn't have enough time to react. The baskets are then sold on at markets and car boot sales.

Baskets sell for e25-e30 each. Many houses will have 3 - 4 baskets.

I hate to admit it but it's money for old rope.

The general feeling is that its for resale. We had to take in solar lights because someone was lurking in the garden and tried to steal some of them.

A friend had a wrought iron bench stolen also
