Hi all,
Myself and the girlfriend want to get away for the last two weeks in September.

I have heard that Sardinia is great but is expensive and we are on a tight budget.
Has anyone been there? Who did you fly with? Where did you stay?
Would we save much by booking flights and accomodation seperately?

My girlfriend also suggested Malta but i know noone who has been there.

Thanks,

Re: Sardinia for a holiday

We went there a couple of years ago on a Sunway package and stayed in the Hotel San Marco just outside Alghero. Accommodation was OK but they were renovating at the time. We would've preferred one of the self catering apartments rather than a room on a B&B basis but couldn't get one. As with Sardinia and Corsica, Sardinia is not cheap as a package destination but once there prices are not excessive even in the more tourist oriented areas and particularly when compared to Irish prices (especially eating out!). Like Sicily, once you're there and not staying out in the sticks it's quite easy and cheap to get around on public transport (local and regional buses and trains) if, like us, you don't drive. This is how we explored some of the region surrounding Alghero and the regional capital Sassari. If you're looking for wild nightlife then you may be disappointed. Oh - and the beaches just outside Alghero on the road to Mussolini's planned model town of Fertilia fringed by pine forests are beautiful, clean and uncommercialised (Jaysus - I should've been a travel agent, wha!? ;) ). At the time RyanAir were flying daily from Dublin to Alghero but I think they only fly from London now - just in case you wanted to arrange your own itinerary/trip.

Hope this helps.

Re: Sardinia for a holiday

Thanks Clubman,
You're on the money as usual!!

I think i would like to arrange my own holiday there. I read in the Sunday Times that the south west of the island was beautiful but i have so far failed to find any info on accomodation in this area of the island after a full morning searching on the net!

Re: Sardinia for a holiday

Thanks 50cent. Well the north west was nice anyway! ;) For independent travelling I'd be inclined to start with [broken link removed], the official Italian tourist authority.

Holidayed in Sardinia last year - stayed in the Hotel Calabona on the outskirts of Alghero - they have a website.

It is much cheaper flying Ryanair from Stansted to Alghero and organising your own accommodation rather than booking a package holiday. Got talking to some English people while there who flew in for weekend/week/fortnight breaks with Ryanair for less than STG £30 return.

Locals were very friendly and went out of their way to be of help.

We found it hard to spend money - there are plenty of restaurants but they all offer the same type of Italian cuisine. By the end of the second week, I'd have killed for a Chicken with Ginger and Sping Onion. (Anyone looking to open a Chinese/Indian/Thai restaurant, should start by looking in Alghero).

While there, a re-match of the 1982 World Cup Final between Italy and Germany was held in the local stadium. The two teams stayed in our hotel. Had a great time with Paula Rossi, Marco Tardelli, Claudio Gentile etc. Sheer heaven

Cheers lads!

Thanks for the info 'whocares'
Looks like the 'bring your own seat airline' ie Ryanair will be getting a call if flights are that cheap.

While in Sardinia are their any good beaches or sights worth visiting?

As for Rossi- I always thought he looked a bit of a big girl's blouse. Scored some nice goals in the final but he kinda vanished without trace after the '82 finals from what i can remember!
A bit like Toto Scillachi (I know i've definately got the spelling wrong there, Clubman - go on do your worst!!)

A bit like Toto Scillachi

Looks OK to me! :lol Coincidentally, I was behind the goal in the Olympic Stadum when the he scored that goal to end our involvement in Italia 90. Funnily enough, many northern Italians didn't really like him because he was a dodgy looking Sicilian who had elbowed Baggio out of the first choice striker spot during the competition.

For what it's worth, I'd recommend the Rough Guide and Lonely Planet series of books generally for most destinations.

Sardinia

Hi,

I was in Sardinia 2 years ago in Santa Teresa di Gallura in the North East of the island. We went in late September but the weather was not good. We stayed in an area called Baia Santa Reparta which was lovely and the accommodation was in 2 bed apartments which had balconies and roof terraces and were very big. I booked the whole lot myself online and the full holiday cost €225 per person for flights, accomodation, car hire for 2 weeks!!!!!!
The area we were in is right beside the Costa Esmarelda which was lovely but to be honest I prepferred Santa Teresa as it was less touristy and the beaches were quiet.
If you plan to go in august expect to pay exorbitant prices as this is when most of Italy are on holidays!!
