Folks,

Any ideas how to get rid of creaking floors upstairs. As far as I know its a chipboard thats underneath. Thanks

You should be able to screw the floorboards down into the beams underneath. It is amazing what a difference this makes. I did this when they were changing carpets in my parents place, and it really stopped the creaking.

In the US, at Home Depot, they used to sell a fairly inexpensive kit that allowed you to put the screws even through carpet. You may want to check the usual suspects (e.g., B&Q, Woodies (and no I'm not affliated with either!) to see if they have something like this here.

Best,

look out for pipes and cables just below the chipboard. in older houses the top of joists are notched out and pipes and cables laid there. butter off lifting the chip board and putting marine ply down with screw, not nails

pie man is correct - look out for cables/pipes but don't use marine ply - far too expensive for that type of application - use standard 18mm ply and you'll be fine.
