    Brendan, never rely on Laya's maps, it's quite confusing. The tob states full cardiac and day cover in Blackrock and Mater Pr, shortfalls for anything else. Full cover in the Beacon for everthing.

    Quoting both these to point out that the insurers hands are tied re: public hospital charges. The department of health legislated for the charges so the insurer must pay them, not paying is currently illegal.

    I have heard of cases where an insurer declines the claim and then the hospital will pursue you for the €800ish per night and not €80 per night.

    If he drops cover for 5 years he'll have a 42% loading when he takes it out again. Age 65 taking it out again - 34 - 10 years credits for continuous cover since 2006 = 21 x 2%. He won't receive LCR credits for his social welfare benefits history.
