Self Employed running costs used as PAYE tax credits?

Hi, I worked 5 months of last year as a PAYE worked. For the last 7 months of 2006 I was setting up as a sole trade and incurred running costs that were more than my earnings as a sole trader for 2007. Can I use this excess in running costs & expenses as tax credits against my PAYE income tax...

    Pizza Toppings

This thread has been very bad for my mental health. I've had to put plastic covers on my keyboard to save it from the drool. Personally, a pizza aint a pizza without pepporoni on it. Recently had one with basil pesto on it though which worked really well.

New Years in Ireland - where to go?

Bundoran is full of life on New Year's. It's a much livelier version of Lehinch and will most likely have some good bands on around New Year's. Good accomodation -

    restaurant in limerick

Copper and Spice in the City Centre is nice. Also, as you're walking up O'Connell Street, there's a lovely wee italian down some steps on the left. Can't remember the name.

What do I get for friend emigrating to the Land down-under?

Fly spray! Nah seriously, one of those water pouches is very useful. Like carrying a water bottle around with you that you can refill, but when it's empty, it can be rolled up to save space.

What to wear at the gym

Wear whatever you think. It doesn't matter....as somebody said above, half the people in gyms are posers that are two worried about themselves and the other half are probably so bored from looking at the same spot on the wall for the last 20 minutes that they'd welcome somebody wearing weird...

Sole Trader Expenses - Computer Purchase?

Sorry for jumping in on this thread but I have a question. In the case of software that is >€1,000 in value, do I capitalise this? If so, do I treat it as a capital asset and depreciate it using the 12.5% over 8 years rule? I know it can be argued that software does depreciate but I'm a bit...

    Leave Encashment Calculation

Hi Peter, It would seem reasonable to me that the bonus should be incorporated into this calculation especially since the company you refer to formally integrated it into the gross salary. I worked with a company that had a similar practice!

Good place for breakfast between Shannon Airport and Galway?

yeah, plenty of good grub in Ennis. If you want a good fry though, there's a little place called "the thatch" or something like that accross the road from McDonnells outside Shannon town Center. It does good pizzas too apparently.

    Bank account for soletrader

It's very easy to go to the CRO and register a business name. This will enable you to open a business account rather than a different personal account. For piece of mind I would think it is definetely worth doing this. BOI have a very good business start up package with no fees for 1st 2 years...

    Belfast for the weekend

Belfast is a great place. Lots of good pubs and some great indian restaurants....try the Moghul on Botanic avenue. Otherwise just avoid the obvious things like running up to the Rangers Supporter's Pub (which is actually quite close to the night life area between the uni and city center) on...

Must VAT number appear on invoices

A VAT number for a sole trader is made from your PPS number with IE stuck in front of it but as Clubman says, I don't see it as an issue. Also, if you are registered for VAT then you must include a VAT number on your invoices so that other business who you are invoicing can claim that VAT back...

Looking for a "big" house for 12 adults for a weekend?

is an old style house on the prom in Bundoran (3 hours from Dublin). It is operated as a lodge and as such you don't have full self-catering facilities but it holds up to 24 people.

keeping 'throw' in place on couch....aargh

I know what you mean. I used to have the same problem. It was so bad one morning, I came downstairs and couldnt even find the throw. It was buried and squashed under the cushions. I can only imagine what was going on on my couch. Anyway, I was on the verge of resorting to thumbtacks or itching...

Which database software should I use?

It really depends on the amount of data and how you want to use it. Microsoft Access is handy for small databases. Pivot tables in excel do quite a good job of simple analysis. Once your data sets start getting bigger, something like Microsoft SQL Server may be the job.

    Ennis bypass

Don't think it will be completed until Summer 2007! There are a few little shimmies around ennis though. If you can figure them out from a good map, it would be worth your while. Can save you 20 or 30 minutes on a bad day.
