    Recommend a €7000 car

Went for the Toyota Auris in the end - petrol. We're very happy with it!

    Recommend a €7000 car

It is indeed quite modest but that's what we have. Might be able to push it up a bit if it meant something like a good bit lower mileage. We're looking at 2012 but concentrating more on mileage so we'd do 2011 too. Hoping to be in a better position next year or so - hoping to trade in or sell on...

    Recommend a €7000 car

H not keen on Hyundai but I was thinking of an i30 - they seem good enough to me. You're right about the S40 and Ford Focus, they are essentially the same engine for that age car. Apparently parts are not more expensive as a result.

    Recommend a €7000 car

Wri thanks for the quick responses. Yeah, they are quite different Ceist. But both in our price range. Our old S40 was very comfortable for long journeys and really easy to drive. I don't think we'd like anything as big as an Avensis - the S40 seems to be a smaller car more comparable to a...

    Recommend a €7000 car

Hi, H and I have the above budget to get a car in the next few days. It will be shared. Looking for a mid size as H has to travel 1-2 hours for work a few times a month, and I need to travel to see an unwell family member for the foreseeable future. Other than that, ordinary use is 40-50 km a...

Signing on and short-term offered self employed work

Hi there My husband is signing on and was offered 2 weeks work but on a self employed basis. Is it very difficult to sign off and sign on again when the work is finished? He wouldn't have a p45 to sign on again.

Older car costing more on insurance!

Would it be unlawful to leave someone on the insurance who never drove the car in order to have a lower premium? Rather than a person driving with no insurance it would be a person not driving with insurance!

Household budgeting (Groceries/Toiletries etc) for a family in the recession

This made me whistle! I would be interested to know what people think is a reasonable price to pay for one dinner. I was working out Shepherd's Pie at about €2 per large adult portion (steak mince, carrots, celery, onion, garlic, peas, stock, potatoes). Didn't count in the electricty/gas.

How to improve fuel efficiency for Volkwagen Polo diesel 1.4

Just wrote a big long post and then hit something by accident and lost it all. So much more briefly - I don't seem to get much better mileage from my car than an average petrol car (basing this on aarouteplanner) and wondering why? Driving at 80kpm in fifth gear will take 2000 revs which seems...

Motor tax - timing issue - advice?

Got stopped without tax (the tax was out when I bought it) after just buying a car, vehicle cert had literally arrived that morning but I still got a ticket which I couldn't believe - but my local guard quashed it (had to produce all evidence of car purchase dates, receipt of logbook etc etc)...

Closing Bank Accounts in favour of CU - realistic?

EBS sounds great, thanks Kimmage. 1500 is very do-able, though 500 on deposit isn't too bad either!

    How long do shoes last?

I would expect shoes to last two years at least for that price, fairly heavy usage.

Help! Want to take over wife's 1/2 of Mortgage

Hi lowpoint, I'm very sorry you are going through a terrible time. I was just wondering if your Dad could buy your wife's half of your home, negative equity and all, so that she is off the mortgage and deeds. You could come to some arrangement with your Dad yourself - as far as ability to repay...

Mother working, father on JSA, Entitled to something?

Hi there, there are some training schemes where the participants receive payments that are not means tested, e.g. https://www.welfare.ie/EN/OperationalGuidelines/pages/vtos.aspx - maybe your Dad could look into doing something along those lines.

    Install central heating

Got this done around 2005, went the combi boiler route, installed 7 or 8 rads and think the whole thing was about €7000. Sorry to be hazy but we were also getting bathroom done. House had floorboards so pipework was easy to put under. 3bed terrace house. Wasn't a huge job. House was piped for...

Traveller in Phil Hogan row was convicted of stealing cash

Curious about this myself... if I acquire a horse or two and apply for social housing do I get a field too? I wonder what the rent would be?
