Killing brambles in hedge, no access to roots

There is a version of Roundup that you can use on an individual leaf by leaf level. It's kind of like a large poisonous pritt-stick. It's fine for precision weeding in an otherwise sensitive bed of plants. I think you would have a hard time getting enough Bramble leaves in a hedge to have much...

    how to deal with rookery

When a submersible ocean research vessel reached 11km down in the ocean, it discovered a plastic bag and some sweet wrappers. I think we have the edge on the rooks and rats here. Nesting birds are protected by law. They'll probably be less of a nuisance in a few weeks time when the fledglings...

Fair Deal/Nursing Homes Fair Deal - questions

I'll be happy to be wrong (I've plenty of practice). Something on the FDS web page that backs your statement up is: "Your contribution towards the cost of your care will be worked out after a financial assessment. The HSE then pays the balance between what you pay for your care and what the...

Fair Deal/Nursing Homes Fair Deal - questions

From my understanding of it, they would pay €88k per year. The FDS doesn't suit everyone - if you have a lot of assets like this example, you come off worse financially.

Fair Deal/Nursing Homes Fair Deal - questions

Yes. There is no link between the cost of the home and the cost of care to the applicant if they use the Fair Deal Scheme. So regardless of cost, the FDS will establish all the assets and income, and charge the applicant 7.5% of value of the assets, and 80% of the income every year. After 3...

Health Insurance Availing of Fair Deal loan scheme in case where parent and child are co-owners of home

As I understand it, the fair deal scheme is not dependant upon having a family home. Each person is assessed based on their needs and assets. If you have a share in a house, then that is part of the assessment, and is taken into account towards what you can pay for your care, along with your...

    VPN

I can only playback on the TV if I use a HDMI cable to connect my laptop to the TV. I guess there could well be a VPN client for smart TVs, but I haven't looked.

    VPN

I can confirm that I've used BBC iplayer successfully using NordVPN, just now. It took a few goes though, and cycling through a number of NordVPN UK endpoints before it worked. As has been commented earlier, BBC is actively closing off access to known VPN endpoints.

Anyone else get charged for a text to an unknown UK number on their GoMo bill?

2 weeks in, and nice and boring! I was on eir Mobile before, so I'm not expecting any change in coverage, which was fine anyway. The only technical difference I've spotted so far is they don't support WiFi calling, where regular phone calls are tunnelled through nearby authenticated WiFi...

Anyone else get charged for a text to an unknown UK number on their GoMo bill?

This happens (on iPhones at least) when you change network provider. There is a brief notice on screen shortly after swapping the SIM to effect that you may be charged by your operator as the iPhone requests configuration settings from Apple. It's a once off (or once per home network operator...

    Irresponsible? Silly? Stupid?

This is a fascinating thread. I've a question, rather than an answer. I think most of your points have been addressed quite well already. As you currently have a job, and pay PRSI etc, you are possibly/probably still on track for the full contributory state pension when you hit 66. If you stop...

    Smart TV

If you are thinking of a sound bar, having one of the HMDI port support HDMI ARC is handy. It carries audio from the TV to the sound bar, so you don't have to wire any other peripheral connected to your TV to the sound bar too.

    Security on gofundmepages

No https? That's pretty bad. I would decline to hand over any sensitive information at all if I thought someone had lacked the basic sense to turn on encryption. It costs next to nothing, and is technically very simple, so there's no excuse at all. I wouldn't decline because I feared for the...

Many wasps/bees entering sleepers in garden

The large wasps you see at this time of year are new queens, who were born last year, and hibernated somewhere cosy over the winter. They're emerging around now and looking for nesting sites. They are not particularly aggressive. Gently shooing them towards the window, or using an upside down...

Are the councils buying apartments for social housing?

Two houses on my road (DCC is our council) sold recently, and the neighbours concerned said they had sold to DCC. I heard this second hand, not directly from the neighbours selling up.

    Falling in Love at 70

    * What should we do with the extra money from the sale of the two houses, especially if we downsize? We are talking about 300,000 euro or so. Update (or make!) a will. Pay an independent financial advisor a few quid to establish your combined risk appetite, and make recommendations based on it...

If Bitcoin was worth $1 each in 2011, why are they worth $12,000 each now?

This bit intrigues me - bitcoin was initially posited as a currency. So it was meant to facilitate the exchange of goods and services, just like any other currency. A euro represents a unit of work, or a portion of a good. If I found out by holding onto my euro for a week, I could buy twice as...

If Bitcoin was worth $1 each in 2011, why are they worth $12,000 each now?

That would be an uncomfortable innovation for many. Would the tool (and it's owners) be able to discriminate between lost bitcoins, and those that were just sitting around waiting to be used by their rightful owners? I'm sceptical that such a tool can be made without finding flaws in the bitcoin...

If Bitcoin was worth $1 each in 2011, why are they worth $12,000 each now?

No, you are not entirely dependant on the merchant's security - you have the protection of the bank, who guarantee not to hold you responsible for fraudulent use of your card. They in turn are insured against loss, and build the cost of this into the cost of the card (which of course they pass...

If you are claiming that Credit Cards created opportunities for new ways of doing crimes, I'm with you 100%.
