Applying for job without qualifications listed in advertisement

+1 Diziet. Job descriptions can be "aspirational" (I say that in quotes because sometimes the people having the aspirations aren't the people who do the hiring). If you have relevant experience, absolutely apply for it. Nothing ventured...

Genuine Query re: recent announcement in public pensions

Thanks both - that Indo article was completely misleading in that regard. Jeez, I hate the Indo!

Genuine Query re: recent announcement in public pensions

Hi all this is a genuine question and not a call to arms to flame the public sector. I saw these two articles (one from the IT, one from the Indo): IT: [broken link removed] Indo: http://www.independent.ie/national-news/public-servants-to-get-20pc-tax-on-pensions-of-euro100000-2949194.html...

    Income Tax on Company Shares

Your first mail is correct - if you exercise and sell options, then income tax (and the other charges) are due within 30-days. You can't offset a capital loss against this I'm afraid. See: www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/rtsoa.pdf (.pdf document) for all the details.

National Irish Bank - increase in rates

Update - because I am already on a discounted rate (the 3.15%), I can only get 0.2% off the 4.1% rate if I go for the Prestige pack. Presumably, those people who are on 3.4% (going to 4.35%) can get the full 0.45% off.

National Irish Bank - increase in rates

I met them today. It seems that different increases apply to different people. As I mentioned initially, I'm on 3.15%. They are increasing my rate by 0.95% (so the range of increases from between 0.2% and 0.95% seems correct). The top rate is 4.35% so that would apply to those who have a...

National Irish Bank - increase in rates

Thanks Clubman (welcome back) - that is relevant. My letter does state that the increase will be to 4.35% (4.44% APR), rather than 4.25%. What's unclear is if all residential mortgages (so, the 3.4% quoted on that NIB page, the 3.65% for offset and the 3.15% that applies to mine) will be...

National Irish Bank - increase in rates

Hi Orka what rate were you previously paying? Did they also increase to 4.35%? Thanks!

National Irish Bank - increase in rates

I just got a letter from National Irish Bank increasing my variable rate from 3.15% to 4.35%, an increase of 1.25%. NIB has not raised variable rates like the other institutions to date. I know that the entire risk of having a variable rate is that banks can raise the rate as and when they...

    no rights self employed

I don't think that his post reflects an actual "reality", rather an ill-informed view of the tax system as it applies to the self-employed. Yes, in reality, that chap appeared to be boasting, but his story is just one, and a fairly dodgy looking one at that. Self employed people do pay more...

    Selling investment property, tax implications...

There is only one way this would be in any way logical (although still not successful) and that's if you sold your PPR. No tax system allows you to offset an *unrealised* loss against a capital gain. Gains made on PPRs are exempt from CGT and, therefore, losses on PPRs are not allowable. This...

    Surgery in US

VHI covers treatment abroad if it's not available here but I think there are limits to how much you can claim. Give them a call (they were very helpful to us). There are few hoops you need to go through on this end (letter from GP etc) before you go. That said, I think treatment in the US is...

    Tax etc on rental income

It's definitely a key area on which Revenue is concentrating. I believe they are checking PRTB registrations (without which you can't claim the 75% mortgage interest against tax) and checking tenants' applications for rental relief against landlords' declarations of tax. I agree that there are...

50% Negative Equity - opinions on ways to lessen this

Revenue will know if you stop TRS, because they are the ones that authorise it. If you rent out the apt, you will need to pay tax on the rental income (less all the deductions, plus all the extras, such as increases insurance, PTRB fee, NPPR fee etc.) I just wanted to clear up the confusion...

    Notice Period Legal obligation

It should say something in your contract. If the contract (or letter extending your probation period) does say that you automatically become "permanent" on passing your exams, you can see your employer's point. However, if the contract or letter says that you will be informed of your...
