Should I make a gift to a child now ahead of any reductions in CAT thresholds?

Thanks for prompt & detailed replies. This website is a truly wonderful resource. Do I read this right that fathers CGT liability can be offset by the child in their separate taxpayer CAT calculation? How/why does that work ? .

Should I make a gift to a child now ahead of any reductions in CAT thresholds?

With the widely rumored reduction in these thresholds from their current level of Eur335,000 for children, does it make sense to transfer/gift property & assets up to that value to child now, so that the child ultimately gets the higher lifetime tax allowance benefit before the threshold is...

Health Insurance Alternative to simplicity by Laya

PS We spoke to an advisor from Cornmarket today (as our renewal is soon also) & he said that the co-pay for orthopaedic procedures is frequently waived if you were prepared to have the procedure done in a different hospital which they have better arrangements with - which I wouldn't have any...

Health Insurance Alternative to simplicity by Laya

Firstly call Laya & ask them to explain it all to you. Ask about co-pay amount for things like hip etc. We’re with Irish Life & important to know that there’s a 2 year period which you have to wait before you can claim once you’ve added their orthopedic plan. We worked out that it was going to...

Health Insurance teachers plan VHI - alternatives?

Go to Cornmarket who are a broker, & have teachers schemes. They listen to what you are trying to achieve (per your description) & advise best policy. We moved to Irish Life Health from VHI (on a teachers scheme) as we had similar objectives (incl lowering costs) to yours.

My shares are down 30% - what should I do?

Depends whats in it, & what your objectives are. The general advice is that a 'fund' should be a long term investment which rides out the peaks & troughs but generally moves upwards. Look at the S&P chart for the last 20 years. As an aside, if you've only lost 10% in the last week, you're...

    Time to buy in

If you're chasing thin gains in the same 3 stocks, and doing it frequently, why not go with a low cost online execution only broker ? Davy are one of the most expensive ?

Don't IB charge USD10/month for their IBKR Pro plan ? The IBKR Lite plan, which has zero monthly charge, is not available to non-US residents ?

Many wasps/bees entering sleepers in garden

In the last few days I have had dozens of these wasps/bees flying in to try to crawl into the cracks between railway sleepers in my garden. They're not all going for the same entrance (so don't appear to be trying to nest, I think!) but trying to crawl into the gaps along a stretch of the...

Invest in passive fund which tracks S&P500, at lowest cost

Not sure what you mean - as I said, I'm not looking for any kind of managed service: purely passive, and just enquiring about DEGIRO's bona fides.

Invest in passive fund which tracks S&P500, at lowest cost

Thanks What about security of eg DEGIRO ? If I invest a sum there is it in my name with the fund or in DEGIROs (ie I hurt if DEGIRO fail) ?

Invest in passive fund which tracks S&P500, at lowest cost

Looking to invest in a fund which tracks S&P500. Purely passive. Has anyone prepared a list of such funds available in Ireland & their associated costs ? I understand that costs decrease the more you are prepared to put in, especially if talking to Irish banks & investment houses, but either...

How do the new rent controls affect selling and buying a rental property?

I can't see any rules/guidance on this on RTB - is there any ? I would have thought they would be defining their scope, which would cover things like length of time etc ?
