Insuring and taxing a car you don't yet own?

The car is part of the estate and bequeathed to one of us in the will. We want to be able to use it without waiting for probate to complete, as that will take a few months yet. The key question for us is can we insure the car without formally owning it? Thanks

Insuring and taxing a car you don't yet own?

Is it possible to insure yourself on a car when you're not the owner? We have a family car, the named owner is recently deceased, and it's been off the road for months, so the tax expired. We want to be able to use it but no-one is insured on it and it's not taxed. Can we get insured on it...

    €200 Property tax Ireland

The P11 form has been mentioned a few times in this thread. Can someone please explain what a P11 is and when it should be filled out in relation to this tax? Is it for landlords or ordinary homeowners? I can't find it on the Revenue site. Thanks

Boarding and insulating attic for storage

Hi, The house has a new fusebox and wiring. I think some of that old wiring up in the attic might be redundant - who knows though! Better to be safe and mind it. There is a plastic water tank up there too, which was put in recently but not insulated. I am going to wrap it in insulation (not...

Boarding and insulating attic for storage

Hi, We have a really cold house that has a little bit of old fibreglass insulation up in the attic between the ceiling joists, put there by the previous owners. The house is very small so we want to put down chipboard in the attic to use it for storage space, but also make it as insulated as...

    Unwaged discount on rail fares?

Does anyone know if you can get a discount on your train ticket when you are unemployed? The Irish Rail site doesn't seem to have any information on it, nor can I find any information anywhere else online. Students get discounts, am I being terribly naive in hoping that the unwaged do too?

Paying by laser card - merchant can see your account balance?

I contacted Merchant Services at my bank and they never heard of this either. They said it would surely be illegal if the balance it could be seen, Good tip about the authorization code. I'll dig up the receipt and check it. Hopefully it was just a fluke.

Paying by laser card - merchant can see your account balance?

Seriously, he really did have our balance there. He made a joke pretending that it was about 3 decimal points more to the right - i.e. over 100k, but when he showed us the screen it was our actual balance. I had just checked it at an ATM the day before so knew it was right. I have never seen...

Paying by laser card - merchant can see your account balance?

We were out in a restaurant the other day and paid by laser card. The guy came down with the little handheld thing and after we punched in the PIN he joked about the balance in our account, and he showed us - he could see what was left in our account! I never knew this could happen with laser...

    Flushing out radiators?

Hello, Got a radiator efficiency question: We are in a house that has 4 old radiators that only heat up at the top, and are stone cold in the middle and at the bottom. There is one new radiator in the bathroom and that gives great heat. We've bled the old radiators and it's had no effect, so...

Giving up work to look after sick mother

Carer's leave, I didn't even think of that. That's a really good idea, because I think I wouldn't have the "stamps" for the dole alright. Thanks guys, really appreciate the advice, it's hard to see something clearly when you're in the middle of it.

Giving up work to look after sick mother

Hi, I hope some knowledgable people can help me with a bit of advice on my situation. I need to leave my job this summer to look after my mother. She had a very serious debilitating illness a few months ago and is being looked after at home. There is no good outcome to this, it's a permanent...

    Stamp duty clawback?

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I must have declared an incorrect PPR. I thought PPR meant your "home", but I suppose it doesn't necessarily mean that at all. Well, I'll write to them and explain it, and hopefully that will be the end of it. I wish the revenue made things like this clearer...

    Stamp duty clawback?

Hi all, First time I've posted here so I appreciate your advice. I've looked at the other posts about stamp duty clawback but I'm still not clear on my own position from the revenue's perspective. I bought an apartment in 1998 and have lived there ever since, all fully paid up in tax terms...
