In 2016, we will borrow €2,765,000,000 or €600 per man woman and child

The Dept of Education are spending an absolutely fortune on portacabins in schools. It's criminal. A few select/connected portacabin distributors are making a killing. The rental costs are exorbitant. The government would be much better off buying the portacabins or building school extensions.

796 Irish babies in a septic tank

I absolutely agree with this. I don't care what the roman organisation does after it has released it's grip on the education system.

    The mythical sophisticated Irish Electorate

I votes Yes and I don't respect the majority decision at all! I think the SIE got it very wrong and the Enda made a balls of it. There will be no substantive reform to either house now. I also think that they have given FF some legitimacy again which sickens me.

    Protests...enough is enough

I really didn't know much about the Dail protest until a few days before it happened but I too support the ideal of a Dail protest even if I could not quite grasp what the objective was. Anyway I am friendly enough with my local TD. He is relatively new in the Dail and I have known him for...

I'm cynical about medical staff complaining about conditions in hospitals.

Hmmmmm, at the risk of appearing a revisionist, I dont think we really fought the "Brits" for hundreds of years. Some people fought for independence but most people were more than obedient to our rulers. After the 9 years war we did a have a few risings but most were drunken orgies (e.g. Robert...

Croke Park 2 - dead before it gets voted upon

Sen Maurice Hayes having a go at the civil service. Hard to argue with it. http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/civil-service-putting-own-privileges-before-state-29120374.html

Scottish cardinal resigns but Irish cardinal does not

It does look like the Vatican knew all about O'Brien but only made their move after he had come out in support of priests marrying and having kids. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/mar/04/cardinal-obrien-catholic-church-scotland What a warped organisation this Roman church is. Don't start...

Croke Park 2 - dead before it gets voted upon

Agreed, the biggest problem with the HSE and it's budget is the back office bureaucracy. It is simply rediculous. So so many back office resources/roles doing zero value add work. You will not fix the HSE without completely restructuring it and that must include major compulsory redundancies...

the day enda lost the next election-awful

Agree with that. I am very surprised a new party hasn't been formed in the past few years. FG and FF and even Labour are essentially the same and most of the politicians are short sighted and self serving. We need some visionary leaders but not sure our electoral system or electortae can make...

the day enda lost the next election-awful

I thought it very cowardly of Enda not to offer an official apology. Its the least he could have done. Don't even start me on the religious orders.

does the civil service have to agree new pay deal before TD's stand up and take a hit

Well put, the Irish are just a bunch of mé-féiners. The common good does not come into it.

Did you do anything different for Christmas?

Went for the annual swim in Salthill on Christmas morning. One of the best years in ages and a brilliant way to get into the Christmas spirit. Huge crowds of young and old, great banter, refreshing swim and alcoholic tea. And all for great causes (Cope, Hospice etc).

    RIP Páidí Ó Sé

A class footballer in some class teams. Amazed to hear he only conceded one point from 10 All Ireland finals. He will be missed.

    Budget Announcement

Joan Burton has been worse than useless in government (actually Howlin probably worse). I remember her harping on about means testing child benefit which I agree with. She has done nothing to fix this since she came to power. If it's an IT system issue, get it fixed/enhanced!

Can anyone say anything good that this government has done which improves our lives?

I read earlier than only 5 countries in EU have a higher average Public sector salary than the average Private Sector salary... Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal.

    Mad drivers.

Anyone notice how crazy drivers become as soon as December starts? Every year it's the same. People just have no patience and do crazy manoeuvres.
