    Joan Burton Must Go!

I cannot think of anything she has accomplished in all her years in the Dail. I remember her giving out constantly about means testing the child allowance. As soon as she got to power, she basically said it cant be done because of the IT setup or some such waffle.

    Medical Doctors and General Arrogance

Most consultants have the God complex and believe that good manners is not required. They can be very obnoxious but thankfully people are more inclined to question them (and sue their asses) these days so they are improving, well the younger ones anyway.

    Rabo Direct investment fund

I have some cash (15k) on deposit in Rabo earning 1-2% I think. Should I move it to an investment fund? If so, what medium risk and short-medium term investment fund would you recommend? What about this one? [broken link removed]

Croke Park 2 - dead before it gets voted upon

I worked in the public sector for several years (and made a stupid decision to leave) and you'd have to douse your manager in petrol and start flicking a lighter to get a poor rating (especially if you were in the union). Increments were/are an entitlement. Twice I saw two utterly useless...

Croke Park 2 - dead before it gets voted upon

Public servants are indeed getting hit again but it is still true that any private sector workers would jump at the chance of getting an equivalent job in the public sector. And so we have a plan to save another €1,000,000,000 from the budget deficit, what about the other €14,000,000,000?? 5...

    Mad drivers.

The rules in Galway are as follows: Hazard/Warning lights to say thank you (or I am changing a puncture) Fog Light to say to car behind you are blinding me with those full beams Left Indicator on for 3 seconds followed by Right Indicator on for 3 seconds followed by nothing = I have no...

How much do you plan to spend per child this Christmas on presents?

Have 2 kids 6+8. I am shocked by some of the spending. We have never gone above €100 for either and probably average out at €50 each most years. We are trying our best not to expose them to brain mush toys likes DSs, Xbox etc and so far so good. The 6yo asked for a surprise this year which was nice.

Serious Defeciencies in Public Health System (esp A&E).

[broken link removed] This actually happened. I heard it from a porter who was asked to hide the trolleys in the corridor in an unused ward and then move them back. As long as HSE management look good, thats all that matters...

Serious Defeciencies in Public Health System (esp A&E).

When the regional health boards were amalgamated into the HSE, there should have been large scale compulsory redundancies with many of the duplicate positions centralised. This never happened but what did happen was managers developed lots and lots of new roles, processes, workflows and...

Changing Perceptions of Wine in Ireland

Interestingly a friend told me last night that 'home drinking' was a major factor in the high numbers of suicides in rural areas. Instead of going to the pub and mixing with other people, many stay at home and drink themselves into a depressed state. Sad really. Not sure how we can rectify it...

Changing Perceptions of Wine in Ireland

I heard a guy on the radio the other day talking about how wine merchants spent years changing the perception of wine to the point now that many people see no harm in wine at all. It seems that during the 1970s and 1980s cheap wine was the drink of choice for alcoholics and that the term...

Wedding cakes - how much did yours cost

I don't agree with this at all; in my experience, there is a large range of costs for music (church music + band + DJ), photographers (good v bad, large album v small album), video (professional v amateur), dress (only a man would say they all cost the same), flowers (some weddings spend crazy...

Wedding cakes - how much did yours cost

Truth be told I think most couples do not enjoy their wedding day especially for the larger white weddings. The lead up to the wedding right up until the church is very stressful and exhausting (for the women especially) and they almost always say that the day went too quickly. You often hear...

    Public Service Allowance Scandal

Having worked in the public sector for many years, I would says its almost impossible to get fired. If you are in the union, there's no chance! You'd have to rob someone on the office floor at gunpoint and even then you'd get a warning. I knew one guy who point blank refused to do any work at...

    2nd class & Communion - still a given?

Yes we are planning a few days away and a nice new dress (may not be white - probably red with horns on top :))

    2nd class & Communion - still a given?

Thanks for your comments folks. Apologies for the zombie comment, I was being silly and I dont want to challenge other people's beliefs. Live and let live. I am not anti-RCC on this issue and I have no problems with the School who were very understanding and accepting. I just want people to...

    2nd class & Communion - still a given?

Yeah maybe but it was Day #3 in 2nd class so we'll have to monitor that. I know the mother and I am fairly convinced she said it alright - one of those front rowers at church on Sundays.

    2nd class & Communion - still a given?

I know, I was joking. But respect works both ways and I am not feeling it from the believers I meet!

    2nd class & Communion - still a given?

Maybe you're right but the pace of change seems very slow. Perhaps in 20-30 years time parents asking their children to eat the body and blood of a 2000 year old zombie might be the exception rather than the rule.
