Can I afford to retire from long-hours stressful job at age 55?

There is a third option- career break. If you took it for six months (maybe a year) it would give you opportunity to look coolly at your options. When you're in a high stressed position it can be hard to detach. Six months career break would give you a break .. to clear your head.. do your...

At a career crossroads, seeking advice

You have the opportunity to take a career break to take up work in the private sector. That would allow you to dip your toe in private sector and see if you like it. It won't have huge impact on your pension if you take a year or so. (I take it you're single pension scheme so can't buy back...

Barrister representing a friend - is this allowed?

Did the barrister put their name on the applicant submissions? If so, it's not speculation. However, if they didn't, obviously it is. I would be very surprised if a barrister put their name to the submissions. Isn't there a box to tick if you've legal representation? If the applicant has...

Barrister representing a friend - is this allowed?

So there's a conflict between the wrc rules and the bar Council rules. The practical point is- if the barrister is negligent in representing the client without a solicitor, will his professional indemnity cover that? I'd say the answer is no from the Barristers insurance cover- but that's just...

3 mortgages, 2 rental properties, 1 family - what are the best options?

You're public sector. Have you explored buying back years to enhance your pension (to cover time on leave/time part-time etc) The terms of pre- 2012 defined benefit pension will probably never be as generous again. If you're that category perhaps look at that. It may be better value than avcs .

    What to do with €50k

I don't think you can currently buy back years (notional service) in single scheme. As already stated you, you might need some money for college fees for your 15 year old. Or to help with house deposit for 26 year old (say as a loan) That's worth thinking about . Given ye aren't saving...
