    Credit cards - Minimum payment

I have contacted my credit card provider with a view to reducing the minimum monthly repayment. They basically told me there was nothing they could do. I was advised that the minimum payment was non negotiable. I was also advised that if I paid anything less than the monthly minimum payment for...

Negative equity. Can the bank sue me for the balance?

I never suggested being dishonest. I merely confirmed that although the OP clearly owes the bank the €50K, in reality he should be able to negotiate a settlement. And by the way. that would involve a 67/33 split of the losses, not 50/50 as you've suggested.

Negative equity. Can the bank sue me for the balance?

Post as many ridiculous little blue faces as you like...if the OP cannot repay the €50,000 (which for a retired 64 year old isn't a massive assumption), then he's perfectly entitled to put a proposal to the bank. MBNA can pursue people who owe them €10,000 so why are they settling for 50% of...

Negative equity. Can the bank sue me for the balance?

Sorry to hear about your situation. I would tread carefully if I were you. Unlike (say) the US where loans are generally non recourse (i.e. you can simply hand the keys back), as other posters have stated you are liable for the loan. However, given the present climate there may be merit in...

Assessable Spouse. Who is this? Highest Earner?

The way both your salaries fluctuate complicates things but assuming you earn €30,000 and your husband earns €45,000, you should do a couple of things: 1) Advise Revenue of the date you were married and look for "Year of Marriage Review". From the date you were married to the end of that income...

Half year in oz and half in Ireland

Given the relative complexity of your situation, you should seek professional advice (i.e. from a tax consultant, not a run of the mill accountant).

New business' 2009 - 3yr tax free exemption

I understand that this scheme is dead in the water...it will remain subject to Ministerial Order forever. And anyway, new businesses or trades making taxable trading profits of up to €320,000 (or €480,000) in their first year are surely thin on the ground.

    Defaulting on mortgage

The bank isn't responsible for your situation...you are. They didn't force you to buy the property. That's the bottom line. If this was the US you could happily do what you're proposing. However in this country non recourse lending of this kind doesn't exist for home mortgages...there's no...

Tax relief on domestic service charges

Yes...you can go back 4 years. Remember, with refuse charges you're claiming for the prior year (e.g. in your 2008 return you claim for 2007's charges).

    Trip to South Africa

Check out Iberia via Madrid or Air France via Paris...avoid BA or South African Airways - both are notoriously expensive. Remember the World Cup is on next year so from (say) April presumably demand will start to rise (even though it doesn't start until June).

It is NOT deductible per Revenue.

    Tax on low income query

They are...but you're opting for joint assessment so you've €77,000 of income between the two of you. You're actually gaining from joint assessment though.

Have I been made a fair offer?

Not a bad effort at trolling...you got a few people to fall for it hook, line and sinker

Tax relief on domestic service charges

Ask for a breakdown of the refuse element of the service charge and then claim relief on the amount for the prior year (e.g. when submitting your 2008 income tax return you include the 2007 refuse charge figure). It'll be small, but better in your pocket than Revenue's!

Key Post MBNA are torturing me with phone calls over cc arrears

My friend lost his job relatively recently and fell foul of these guys. He still lives with his parents and they collectively received 13 phone calls from MBNA over one two day period, most of which were rude and aggressive. One guy raised his voice when asking my friend's father how exactly my...

    Tax Return

I'm sorry to hear about your mother. As PV has outlined, you have until 16 November if the return is submitted online. You have two options - to submit the return based on draft figures or to make contact with Revenue prior to the submission deadline and explain the situation. The key thing is...

Cohabiting couple - more cash by marrying?

Read the OP's post...the "earning" spouse's salary is €45,000 so my figures are correct.

Environment/enviroment is one that pops up reasonably regularly. February/Febuary would also be quite common.
