Is it worth me making voluntary contributions?

Thanks - I did enquire about credited contributions but since I wasn't looking for full time work I reckoned I wasn't entitled to jobseeker's benefit or credited contributions.

Is it worth me making voluntary contributions?

Background: Currently 61. Retired early from public sector with actuarially reduced pension and 25 years of D contributions. Since then have worked in private sector on and off and paid about 8 years of class A stamps. Since then I have been living on public sector pension. This year I have...

    Proposed change to inheritance law

This proposal by the Law Reform Commission to delete the parents "moral duty" to make provision for adult children in their will appears on the face of it to be reasonable but the exceptions are a minefield especially the last two...

Oh my aching back. Need a new mattress

My tuppence..... Had a memory foam mattress......mixed feelings but they are NOT suitable for women of a certain age! Sooo hot. Ikea is a problem with beds/bed linen as their sizes are different. Ended up with a posturepedic mattress last time.

right of residence in a will

If I was your brother I would move in to exercise my right of residence & using your own logic I would justify it as being just to reflect your father's wishes. I think that would demonstrate how unrealistic & unfair your father's will was and might encourage an agreed solution. There is more...

right of residence in a will

In my opinion the fair thing here would be for all siblings to agree to sell and divide the proceeds equally. It sounds to me as if your father was badly advised in drawing up the will. Rights of residence are very seldom used nowadays as they create all kinds of ridiculous situations and do not...

    Loan to Family Member, Advice

On the basis of what you tell us it seems the person is unlikely to repay. Indeed depending on what their background is it could even disincentivise them from earning a living if that was going to trigger repayment. I have had family members who, having been rescued by parental support when the...

Joint executors living in different parts of country. Should two resign for efficiency?

Depending on the scale of the estate one executor is much more efficient than multiple executors as in many instances all will have to sign.......so for example if the deceased has 3 or 4 bank accounts/shares etc it could be a real pain. Definitely reserve rather than renounce.......otherwise...

Sale of house inherited by two siblings

Lots of "it depends" on the basis of the post. how is the property owned between the two brothers - joints owners or tenants in common? what was in the deceased brother's will regarding his share (if any) of the property? has the living owner who is of "unsound mind" been made a ward of court...

Rumour: Honohan of Central bank to resign?

Yes and yes though most people just waited out the 3 months

Average notice period (and payment to employer if broken)

I worked for an Irish subsidiary of a French company where 3 months was the policy for all staff regardless of seniority. It was enforced, especially for the best workers!!!! Not enforced for useless people they ewanted to get rid of. No amount of negotiation had any impact on changing the clause.

What happens when an Executor over distributes an estate?

When I was disposing of family effects including bulky furniture after family members had taken their choices (we rotated) I sent the rest to auction or to a skip. The auctioneer told me I'd barely make the transport costs back at auction - he was quite rude actually and I was glad my poor Mum...

House share or Airbnb? Pros & cons

Could you explain what your understanding is based on? My reading of the rent a room scheme provisions indicate it applies to airbnb provided you are actually sharing your home with the guest.

Will says house to be divided amongst beneficiaries. What exactly does that mean?

To be honest it sounds from what you are implying that any meeting would have been pointless.
