"more than 200 restaurants and cafes have shut this year"

I presume they were referring to increases in minimum wage, sick pay, rates, VAT etc.

"more than 200 restaurants and cafes have shut this year"

I honestly don't know how small cafes and restaurants make money. One near me recently closed put a sign up on the door specifically saying government costs made it impossible to stay open.

    Property & Pension advice, please

OP is paying 3.9% on €170k mortgage. Her house is worth €400k. I haven't crunched the numbers, but if there is a small annual increase in property prices I suspect OP will be better off staying where she is until retirement. A lot depends on whether OP commits to maxing out her pension...

    Property & Pension advice, please

I'm not sure I would downsize now. Assuming property prices continue to rise at a moderate pace you might end up better off waiting until you retire and downsizing then....but obviously there are no guarantees. Also, if you are mortgage-free you may be tempted to spend your extra cash on...

How do lump sum AVCs work in practice?

You pay the full amount and then apply to Revenue for the refund by filling out a Form 11. You'll need proof of the contribution from your pension provider.

How to insure an apartment against a leak

Thanks for that reply Rob. That's reassuring. I would be the opposite of negligent but these sorts of things happen and I couldn't find any way to insure against it. Thankfully there was no issue on this occasion but I was shocked by how threatening the management company was.

How to insure an apartment against a leak

Hi All, I have a top floor apartment and got a scare recently when the apartment below me said they had a leak. As it turned out, it was not coming from my apartment. In the course of establishing this, I found my management company to be quite threatening. They suggested I could be on...

Conor Pope just does not like Revolut

I agree. I feel sorry for anyone who gets scammed. It's a horrible thing to happen and not helpful (or nice) to stigmatise the victim as being stupid etc. I know some people on here say otherwise, but my view is that it can happen to anyone.

Conor Pope just does not like Revolut

I am very scam aware but nearly got caught out recently. I thought I was paying a customs charge to An Post but only twigged at the last minute. Similarly, I have friends who have also nearly fallen foul. I think it happens a lot more often than you'd think. Saying it's stupidity makes people...

What about an opt-out clause? e.g. I opt out of additional security checks for transfers over €x amount.

Really? You've never been scammed in your entire life?

Conor Pope just does not like Revolut

Calling people stupid isn't constructive or helpful. We have all gotten caught out at one time or another (many times in my case). However, it does raise questions about what responsibility financial institutions bear when it comes to scams. In this case, the customer lost €1,100 - not a...

Conor Pope just does not like Revolut

I knew before I even clicked on the article that it would be a cut and paste job. Of two emails in this case. I know it's hard filling a page every week, but journalism really doesn't get any lazier.

Should we pay more tax to have a better society?

Higher-rate tax payers are already paying 52% tax and what do we have to show for it? The way public money is wasted is absolutely shocking - look at the NCH. It's in every department at every level - I see it myself on a daily basis. The solution is reform, not more taxes.

Did anyone decide not to rent for 2 years?

I would reconsider this...I am currently doing it and it's going well. One of the conditions of the scheme is that you have to agree to a six-month agreement. I have signed contracts with my tenants with a start and end date. I'd be surprised if the government pulled the rug from under us...
