You can get a train from Bangkok to Nong Khai, which is across the river from Viantiane. The train is handy as it runs overnight so you don't really lose any time.

Irish Ferries v Brittany Ferries to France

I travelled on the old Irish Ferries boat to France last summer. It was a pretty grim experience, but I must say I found the staff to be very friendly and courteous. I'll be on the Oscar Wilde in a couple of weeks, will be interested to see the difference.

Driving from Ireland (Wicklow) to Alicante, Spain

viamichelin.com suggests a drive time from either Roscoff or Cherbourg of about 17 hrs. Does your husband want to just get the drive done (e.g. in two days) or take his time, four plus days If the former then he'd probably just end up making as much progress as possible and stopping after 8 or...

Anyone see the 20% discount on Aer Lingus site?

I just missed out on an €18 euro saving on flights to Brussels that I booked late last week. :( Flight prices do seem to change quite often. I've kept an eye on other flights that I booked some time ago and they have gone up, then down and now up again to their most expensive level yet.

    Vineyards in France.

The departments of the Languedoc could be a good place to look. There are vines everywhere that should not be at premium prices compared to some of the key AOCs around the country. I would recommend visiting in person and having a sniff around as a lot of properties that turn up on the...

    Lane Discipline on Multi-Lane Roads

On a related note, if a bus lane is inactive - say on a Saturday or Sunday morning - then surely everybody should be driving in it as it is the left-most lane? There seems to be a fear among drivers of using bus lanes even when the sign clearly says they are not in operation. As previous posts...

    Wine Tour Perpignan

If you have a car and would like to proceed under your own steam, then get yourself a copy of "Languedoc-Roussillon: The Wines and Wine Makers" by Paul Strang (Amazon have it) This book has great information on vignerons in every part of the region.

Any Suggestions - Long weekend around Europe.

To be honest, when I spec'd out this trip for myself I was mainly thinking of the dining in San Sebastien...and would let the days look after themselves - I envisage renting a car to get from Bilbao to San Seb, and so having this free's one up to hang around whichever town soaking up the...

Any Suggestions - Long weekend around Europe.

Fly to Bilbao and split some time between there and San Sebastien (1 hr or so away) where you can eat and drink like a king. Right now you could get Thursday to Tuesday flights with Aer Lingus for €65 euro each. Bar-gain, if I had the time I'd do it myself!! Flight out on Thursday 29th May...

Bellinter House - Any Views ?

Wasn't there for a party, but stayed for a night last year. We found the experience disappointing and expensive. Came away feeling that management had a deal to learn about running a house/hotel and that the place looked great but was lacking on some of the basics such as heating and...

    weekend break

I'd agree about NYC in that you may get better use of your time if you stick with a shorter flight...and won't be falling asleep over your dinner at 8pm! (Having said that, with the dollar as it is there's value to be had over there...and fantastic dining) You can eat and drink well in cities...

New York helicopter ride recommend or not

Hey Nad, Assuming you are flying in to JFK, why not kill two birds and get a helicopter into the city when you arrive? http://www.flyush.com/ Haven't done this myself, but will look into it for next time.

    South Africa - safety concerns

We honeymooned there for three weeks. We had a great time, and no safety issues, but we were pretty vigilant at all times. We rented a car and drove widely, though we did avoid driving long distances after dark, and in some places that we stayed we were advised to drive instead of walk for...

    Languedoc / Aquitaine

The Languedoc would be roasting at that time of year. Don't know about Aquitaine. There's an endless amount of things to do and see. Spent a month there last summer and would love to go back and see more. If you like food and wine you'll find no shortage of good eating, markets and vineyards...
