    BMW Timing belt

Timing chain's tend to have a much longer life span than timiing belts. I had an X-type which never suggested changing it at all. Check BMW recommendations in your service manual. Also look out for chain tensioner - the bit that helps to keep the chain on the cogs. The engine in My friend's 320d...

    Mice problem

Re the electronic repellant devices; I bought a multi pack 6 for 30 euro. Thought strength in numbers and value for money. Waste of time!! My wife bought one for 40 euro from a locally owned hardware store (not B&Q etc.). This looks to be a better quality device (..and yes I know quality doesn't...

    Audi A4 Starting Problems

The orange 'key in car' does not flash. I assume this would indentify an immobiliser fault.

    Audi A4 Starting Problems

Hi, I drive a '97 Audi A4 1.9 TDI. Until now I have never had a problem in 145k miles. About six months ago the problem started, rarely at first but now almost once a day. Problem is when starting; the engine turns and starts for a brief second and dies. Suggestions that I've had so far are fuel...

    best sat nav?

I just had a Garmin 660 fitted. Advantage over the 300 is that it is widescreen and also comes with FM transmitter enabling you to tune the hands free on the sat nav into an FM radio station on your radio. If you select the option to have the hands free through the car radio you still have to...

    Inheritance Tax Liability

My aunt's brother having just died has left his estate to her. He was from the north so the house i.e. most of his estate is in the north. She has lived all her life in Galway and is a pensioner. The value of his estate is approx £200k thus below the UK IHt threshold of £300k. Questions: 1...

Leave job now or wait till colleague is back from hols

Depends on the nature of your business. I assume from your OP that your are in the service industry. Say e.g your are a hairdresser then all of your clients would probably move with you. However if you work in an accountancy firm or something else then your clients may view the service as not...

Is an on-line hotel booking valid

No specific T&Cs are stated on the Hotel's website and other than a single comment -'subject to availability'. The confirmation that was sent to me has T&Cs, one refers to the 'rates being subject to availability and alteration' but none refer to the actual booking being subject availability or...

Is an on-line hotel booking valid

I made an on-line booking for a 2 night stay in a hotel via their own website. Everything transacted OK and I got confirmation at the end of the transaction that the booking had been confirmed. I also received an email confirmation of the booking a short time later. Later that day I had an email...

    Drive way

I'm having printed concrete done at the minute, about 330 sq yards. Have had it done before at previous house. Great job, loads of choices on types & colours of print and acid stain finishes. Dependant on wearr and tear it needs re lacquered /. sealed every few years but virtually maintenance...

Estimated cost for partly built garage?

Get a QS - shouldn't cost too much. Has floor been finished. I recently built a garage managed it myuself i.e. got in the various trades when needed etc. I found it roughly divided up as (labour & materials): 1/3 - build up to roof level 1/3 - for roof (finished) 1/3 - window, door, plastering...

Hate new job - Stay or Go?

I agree with most of the previous comments. I'm in engineering and we have a saying that 'its the engineering that's the easy bit, its the people that's the hard bit.' Same can be said for most jobs. I'm an employer and would have reservations about employing someone who appears to be job...

    Repetitive Strain Injury/Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

I had an employee with carpal tunnel syndrome. Ergonomic assessment of the work station is a must as is adequate awareness / training on good practices. We provided an ergonomic mouse which helped as well as did regular rests from using the mouse. Person learned to use left hand to share the...

    Volt Free Contact??

First of all the operation of a contact is two metal surfaces being either opened or closed as part of an electrical circuit. The can contact operated mechanically or electrically i.e. a timer could be either but yours is probably electrical. The term 'volt free' applied to this means that the...

    Houses prices in Northern Ireland

In a few short months property in the north has gone from selling in a few days from going on the market to now taking several months. The market is very stagnant but I'm not aware of prices dropping but there is more negogiating on behalf of buyers taking place. The recent hike in UK interets...

Driveway advice : Best surface option? Cobblelock, gravel, tarmac, concrete?

Do you know what caused the colour to fade - sun? traffic? I'm not an expert but I understand that the last thing to be applied to the concrete should be the sealer which is to help protect the colour from fading due to sunlight etc. On some cases I think you can mix up the dye with water and...

Key Post How to cut your day to day expenditure

Re: Top ten suggestions For casual spending don't have loads of cash always in your pocket. If it's there you'll find something you probably don't need to spend it on. A friend of mine always drew out £100 from the cash machine at a time and was always trying to work out where it went. He now...

Driveway advice : Best surface option? Cobblelock, gravel, tarmac, concrete?

I've used printed concrete about 6 years ago and its a great job where between 4 - 6 inches of concrete is laid, coloured and then a pattern is imprinted onto it - cobble, slate or whatever you fancy. Many colours and prints & designs are available. It can be expensive to have done (>£35/sqm)...

Roman Blinds - inside or outside recess

Have both roman blinds fitted to inside and outside of window recess. Have fitted them on outside on smaller windows as they can look a bit pokey and on inside on larger windows. Fitted neatly on the outside they tend to keep out more light when dropped. Its all down to personal preference.
