    Copper wire phone

Like you, I have an alarm that's connected to a landline (Yale DIY- it phones me if there's an alarm activation) . It is the only reason we have a landline (it never rings except for Nigerian princes or Microsoft telling us we have a computer problem). I resented paying €120 a year just for the...

I messed up my house move - financial mess

The best advice I have been given is, it's not you against your wife, it's you and your wife against the problem. And listen to misemoi. What if you had kept your house and it needed a new boiler/plumbing/storm damage in the meantime? There's 10~15 grand straight away.

    Stove to suit Victorian fireplace

Just to clarify in my mothers case. She has gas heating. The stove would be akin to a little electric oil-filled rad, or a small electric fan heater. Just used to supplement the heating occasionally, but much nicer to look at. I agree, it shouldn't be used as a main heat source (It even says...

    Stove to suit Victorian fireplace

I might offer an alternative, cheaper, solution My mother had a gas inset stove which was on the way out. She also could no longer bend down to turn it on or off, so we were looking at a remote controlled replacement. This was also in an old victorian fireplace. Quotes were coming back in...

    After Retirement

To all the retirees sipping wine in Spain and Portugal, and the Canaries. Just to let you know I cycled to work in the rain this morning. (along a cycle path). The reason I cycle to work in the rain, is because I hate sitting in traffic! Just jealous is all, but I'm two years away from...

    Health expenses claim with Revenue

I remember you could either claim separately or jointly. I wonder if you are jointly assessed, and therefore the default is joint expenses.

    Gillette Labs Razor

Great going Cervelo, especially as you're shaving your whole head so to speak. Do you still have the Merkur lying around? I'd buy it off you.

    Ensuite mould

My 2c worth. The above is the only way to go. firstly because it it what was changed,(which therefore caused the issue). The science is pretty straightforwards. You need air moving to get the steam/water vapour out of the bathroom. Having a vent and a window created that. If you only have a...

Wet Room: Pros and cons please.

Kinda miss ye olde thunderbox myself. Venturing out in the dark, not knowing what would be lurking to snare the unwary, literally being caught with your pants down. Hoping the candle wouldn't blow out, or ignite the fumes emanating from the depths. Tell that to the kids today!

    Windows and doors fitter recommendations

I'm getting Lumi windows and doors fitted by Walker windows at the end of the month. My wife fell in love with Lumi windows, and there appears to be only one company that fits them outside of Dublin. Hopefully it all goes well. It's ar retrofit, replacing old double-glazed units, and...

Recommendation needed for dehumidifier to remove mould in a bathroom.

Another issue is that the incorrect extractor fan is installed (quite common). The axial fans that are mounted on the wall/ceiling are normally only good for a "through wall" application and have a maximum run of 1.5 meters of pipework. In the case of internal bathrooms, there can be a lot more...

Debit card compromised. Good service from AIB

On a similar note, that is why I scratch out the CVV on the back of all my cards and record them elsewhere. If someone steals/I lose the card, they don't have the CVV and therefore it is harder to use it for a web transaction (before I can freeze the card).

    Italian language app

Rocket Languages is very good. The first part is free to try as well, before you commit. What I found great about it is it is uses your computer speakers and microphone and checks your pronunciation etc. So you can just concentrate on spoken Italian, or can use the written part as well...

    New PTSB app

My wife can't open it, same as yourself, cycling after the PAN. Mine opens fine. Same account. She rang PTSB who said to reinstall.

    Gillette Labs Razor

On a tangential note, I shave every day with a Gilette Fatboy adjustable razor made in 1959. I get blades from www.shaving.ie (no affiliation, just like supporting them, and they've great products.) I like the fact that I'm not using, and disposing of, any plastic, and the used razor blades...

Do I require Multi Trip Travel Insurance

You're comparing apples with oranges . Health Insurance, either EHIC card and/or VHI just covers medical issues MultiTrip Traval Insurance (or any travel insurance for that matter) covers all the risks associated with travelling, e.g. lost luggage, cancellation, theft etc. One of the...

    Bullying of small cars.

I drive an i10 as well, and am on the M50 on occasion. I've never experienced the bullying you mention, but I drive at the same speed as other vehicles, which is normally at or around the speed limit. I respectfully suggest it is the fact that you are driving slower than the surrounding...

    Best car for new driver

I'll chime in for a Hyundai. Bought an '09 i10 in the north for €7k inc. VRT etc. 8 years ago. Absolutely trouble free for the last 8 years. Passes the NCT every year, servicing and fuel costs are minimal.
