Tip for those thinking of fixing with AIB ...

Not sure, while there were elements in there that were specific to trackers i.e. warnings about not being contractually entitled to go back on a tracker after the fixed rate (I guess they learned that lesson) there was also generic information on what a tracker, fixed and variable rate are so I...

Tip for those thinking of fixing with AIB ...

Just to update on this I did end up fixing this at then end of last month. I was still on the fence as while I was happy to do so at 2.35% I was concerned about their fixed rates rising in between sending in the form (which was going to take a little while as I needed a valuation too to support...

Key Post I have an AIB tracker – should I consider fixing?

    1) Existing tracker margin .75% 2) Amount outstanding on your mortgage 112k 3) Remaining term 10yrs 4) Lender AIB 5) Value of your home 370k 6) Might you trade up or overpay your mortgage? No 7) Do you face any barriers to switching? E.g. an impaired credit record, a mortgage with a warehoused...

Interactive Investor Ireland absorbed by II UK

It actually seems to be £10 in sterling + £4 non resident charge so nearly €16 a month. Not great if you want to buy and hold allright, will be looking around for other options.

    Packages vs DIY

Are Vodafone offering fibre broadband? If not I'd stick with UPC as their speeds much superior to the older DSL packages (and with the exception of a few areas are still much better than fibre broadband i.e.VDSL . If you are set on getting rid of the TV it might be better to downgrade to UPC...

Poor mobile reception in my home

I recently got Vodafone Sure Signal (but only about a week yet) and so far I am seeing a very significant improvement, gone from 1-2 bars to normally 4-5. I am in a typical modern 3 bed terrace so would really have expected 5 throughout so in a bigger house I'd wonder if it would cover the whole...

    Message from the National Lottery

The content of the email references a true story but the link in the email I received looks suspicious, it was not for loterry.ie but a .com address, I deleted without following to be safe.

    Lottery question

I had a similar debate with my dad a few years ago, couldn't convince him it was just as likely as any other combinations

    100 thousand euro to invest?

You are double counting, there is no saving to paying off 50k if both rates are 1% Savings 100k @1% = Receive 1k Tracker 180K @1% = Pay 1.8k Net interest 0.8k Savings 50k @ 1% = Receive 0.5k Tracker 130k @ 1% = Receive 1.3k Net interest still 0.8k (Excluding effects of DIRT and TRS)

    Travel to USA

I would think it's generated by the ESTA form online which effectively replaced it.

Prior notification re usage of PTSB Visa/Visa Debit abroad . .

I've also travelled when informing AIB and still had the card blocked by their fraud flags.

How much cash can you take on a plane

Don't do that, this might actually raise a suspicion you are trying to hide money laundering. If the transaction needs to be reported and the funds are from a legitimate source and for a legitimate purpose then there would be no issue with just making the necessary report.

Joint Mortgage Ex gone for good - what to do?

That may not be true legally, borrowers are often jointly and severally liable so in the absence of the ex they may seek judgement for the full debt. Ethically the ex should shoulder his share but given he's done a runner seems that's not going to happen, the bank will chase who they can reach.

    AIB 520B shares....

In theory yes if they paid the current price. It would seem the current price is pure fantasy though as recent reports suggest AIB is the most valuable bank in Europe based on market capitalisation (the reports I read acknowledge this is pure nonsense and is due to the very small number of...

Pension levy on DC schemes to fund deficits in DB schemes

If the levy had remained at 0.6% the impact would have been similar as it's on the capital balance (assuming a pension fund returning the same 3% net of fees I get €194 after 40 years)

    The mythical sophisticated Irish Electorate

I believe the Seanad is flawed and I voted yes to abolishing it but it's not quite as un-democratic as you suggest, most of those 1000 people are elected by the electorate in the local or general elections. The university panels are my biggest annoyance.

    Warning on buying any apartment

I think this has more to do with perceived demand for apartments outside major cities than any particular knowledge about the state of the apartments. I wouldn't expect apartments in major cities are any better built that those outside.

    Danske Shut Down Telephone Banking

I noted previously that AIB are playing a similar game and waiving the charge until some time in 2014. It seems like a bit of a bait and switch to get people using the contactless payments, then lob on the charges (which I think in their case will be 20c) when they are in the habit of using...

Why would I not want the Gardai to know my DNA profile?

To be honest this would be my concern more than hackers etc. Some underwriter in an insurance company bribing or otherwise influencing someone with access to get a profile so he can screen for genetic disorders etc a few years down the line when DNA mapping is cheaper and more easily done.
