    Escaping a fixed employment contract

There are two sides to a contract. If one party breaks a condition, why should the other party feel compelled to fulfill his conditions.

In fairness, those snack boxes don't order themselves.

    Steve Irwin death

I have to agree. Whatever views you might have on his "larger than life" personality, the chance he took with his child was completely and unforgiveably irresponsible. If there's any comfort to be drawn from the incident, it's that his own disregard for safety didn't take anyone else out with him.

    Casual childminding

Seems a lot but bear in mind that the minder's day is effectively shot, even though she's only minding them for 2/3 hours. I could be wrong but I don't imagine you'd get too many who'd be prepared to give up their day for €35.

    Fired after 2 weeks

I'd be genuinely interested to know which provision of the 1969 IR act the person could rely on for the purposes of claiming an unfair dismissals. I've searched the Labour Court website and couldn't find the cases referred to. It strikes me as odd that two pieces of Employment Law legislation...

can new employer check what you earned

On a broader note, why mention your present pay anyway in negotiating with a prospective employer? Why not just say "on the basis of my experience, I believe a salary of X is in order". What you end up with is subject to negotiation but you shouldn't need to disclose your salary to support...

    Fired after 2 weeks

I think the advice should be that on the basis of the circumstances provided and the governing legislation, the individual has no legal recourse and has no option therfore but to seek alternative employment. While the extract of the LC case quoted suggests that an exception was made in this...

Receive dole while doing part-time course?

I'd keep schtum on this if I was you. The full-time employed people in Welfare tend not to be overly sympathetic to those who regard full-time employment as something of an inconvenience.

    Having digital photos printed.

Had the exact same experience in Boots, where the range of the picture on the camera's LCD screen was greater than that which printed. From receollection it might healp if you selected the "with border" option. It redeuced the size of the print but from what i can recall is more...

    Good engravers - D.2

There's a very good and well established one in Temple Bar (behind Central Bank). Think the name of it is Cookes. They do a lot of sports trophies and medals and have been there for donkies so they must know what they're about.

Receive dole while doing part-time course?

Don't expect to be left undisturbed for the duration of your course. As mentioned, you're signing a regular declaration that you're available for and actively seeking work. If you're still unemployed after three to six months of signing on, you are likely to be referred to FAS to see how...

Couldn't you get an ultrasonic thingy for the cat and another for the mice/rats? The energy costs are beginning to mount but it might be an option.

"Gurgling" in sink and bath - sign of trouble?

My in-laws recently got an extension built and have noticed recently that the sinks, baths and dishwasher "gurgle" quite loudly when emptying. Is this a sign of trouble ahead or just an annoying sound they're going to have to get used to? Any advice appreciated.

Ryanair wont accept laser card? and its an irish company

Gosh, there's an idea. Why didn't I think of that? I'll get on to it straight away and confidantly expect to see the tax system reformed by the end of next week.

Ryanair wont accept laser card? and its an irish company

Nothing illegal but perhaps immoral. Would that we all had the luxury to play God when it comes to deciding when our debt to society had been discharged and imploring the same society to do more for the less fortunate in another one. Sweet.

    Gas cylinder

Assuming it's of a type that's still usable, I'm sure anyone who owns a patio heater or gas barbeque (depending on what type of cylinder it is) would gladly take it off your hands. An initial purchase of bottled gas is more expensive than a refill so to give it to someone else would either...
