my wife's fiesta 2003 1.4 automatic gearbox engine won't start. she was driving as normal and than lost power on second gear, pulled over and after this engine won't start any more. what it could be? automatic gearbox problem or engine? it's not a car battery we tried other one.

could it be a timing belt? I know when timing belt went in our ford it was like that....car just lost power ( it was idling in traffic) and wouldn't start....btw i know nothing about cars....

Could be a whole range of things and I don't think its an auto gearbox problem necessarily.

It's normally some form of electrical or electronic fault when a car just cuts out like that - doesn't have to be a battery issue and wouldn't be if the car is turning over successfully (tho this will wear the battery down before long).

the one thing with an auto that you can't do is try to bump start it and I think there are issues about towing automatics as well.

I think you need a mechanic.

Did you try moving the gear selector from D to N and then into P before trying to start it.Sometimes the "inhibitor switch" which prevents the car from being started in gear gets sticky.Personally I don't think its anything to do with the autobox.

car doesn't recognise on which gear is that's why can't start the engine. our mechanic after diagnostic thinks it's main controller, but new one cost 1400e :( anyone has idea what else it could be?

Had a similar problem in a Nissan QX, the mechanic put the car key into the silver slot in front of the gear shift and apparently it reset.
