Cheapest lift for private house to fit wheelchair

I have been ringing around the lift companies that I came across on the internet and they all seem to be charging about €20,000 - €25,000 to install a lift in a private house. We are currently discussing a granny flat/extension with an architect and want to know if we can actually afford to put one in the house, he has suggested a stair lift but we have been told that my mother will be in wheelchair so I think she would be more independent with a lift.

Would anyone know if there are any cheaper companies out there or if we could get a company from England or the North to do it for less?

Thanks

As far as I am aware that is generally the price you are going to have to pay for what you are looking for. The big part of the cost is the equipment there is no easy way around this. A stair lift is about half the price of what you were quoted. As far as I am aware grants are available for this kind of work from the hse, but they generally will not cover the whole cost, your architect should be able to give you more information.

Hi

Also consider emergency evacuation, eg, if there was a fire can this lift be used, some lifts can, but the majority can not be used in a fire, just something to consider now, as your mother may be trapped if she could not use the lift in a fire,

sorry i dont know the cost

Sorry I have no specific advice re cost, but have some experience of a lift in a private house. If you can afford it at all, get one. I had two elderly relatives, who, because they had a lift, were able to continue living in their small, but beloved home, until the very end. One of them was totally immobile, the other with a weak heart.

What it meant was, that caring for them was easy, no hoisting onto stair lifts, they never feared falling down stairs, and they did not have to sacrifice any living space on the ground floor.

I know they paid a substantial sum for it, and they were not wealthy by any means. They had it for 9 years, and when asked had they thought it expensive always replied that it was worth twice the price.

I have just built a house and have left a space for a lift should my parents ( or indeed myself) need one in the future.

I should add that this was in the UK, where they are not as rare as in Ireland. Maybe have a surf around some sites in the UK - probably not much help for Ireland, but you never know what useful information you might pick up. Don't forget to look in Northern Ireland.

Best Of Luck.

Could you not look at building an downstairs extension with bedroom/bathroom for not much more that ....it may make an easier living condition as it could be designed with a wheelchair in mind...

or flip it around

build a 2 story extension if that is what you want

but have a downstairs living bedroom are for the mother and a 2nd floor area upstairs that can be a living space or another bedroom?

My brother just bought a second hand house which had a wheelchair lift. As he didnt require the lift we removed it from the house and now its sitting in his shed. The lift is in full working order but would require someone use to installing them to install it, as there was quite a bit of effort to remove it from the house.

If your interested in a second hand lift you can pm me and I'll let you talk to him directly. As its only taking up space in his garage I'm sure hes more than willing to part with it.

Actually reading your post again, the lift we removed wasnt a stair lift, it was a customised lift to move the wheelchair from one floor level to another floor level approx 6ft high. So I'm not sure if this will in fact be of any use.

Hi
