Hi,

What's your experience based on its effectiveness to grow up your business?

- Leaflets under car windscreens (Is that legal?)
- Home post box (if not Junk Mail signal)
- Handing out in shopping centers, etc.
- Posting in notice boards?

Thanks

As a recipient of leaflets, I very rarely read them and they just fill my recycling box.

My response to receiving them
- Under my windscreen wiper - I am unimpressed and if anything will actively avoid your business
- At home - it might get a cursory glance on the way to the bin. If I'm interested, I'll probably hang on to the flyer
- Handed out in shopping centre - If I take one, I'll probably look at it. It will probably end in a bin.

I think that a lot depends on the nature of the business. Personally, I think that leafletting can appear a bit "cheap and cheerful" and so it would not suit a business that is trying to promote a professional image. But if your business is local and is either unique in your area or has a unique selling point that marks it out from the competition, it can be a way of getting your message out there. Keep the message very simple and easy to read. A leaflet with one special offer might be read. A leaflet with a history of your business, your own CV, a list of your services and your three special offers will not be, no matter how great your services might be.

It is illegal to place advertising leaflets on car windscreens.

Be aware also that many of the leafleting agencies will ignore 'No Junk Mail' signs as they are paid by the flyer, so don't care.

Under windscreen - illegal

Door to door - generally ineffective unless it's something people want to read.

Handing out - doubt it would be allowed .

I'd look at social media and use sponsored posts targeting your ideal market. Though that is not as easy as it used to be.

Local papers, local radio and best of all, word of mouth.

A restaurant I used to work in leafleted nearly 2000 houses in the locality with a menu and money off voucher.I think 3 people used the voucher.Complete waste of time.

I would consider using Facebook advertising it is alot cheaper and more effective than using leaflets. The big benefit is you can easily target certain groups,, i.e just show this advert to people females aged 25 - 40 years of old who live in Dublin who are interested in gardening.. etc. etc. etc.

There are plenty of tutorials on Youtube,, you would just need to set up an account (all you need is a credit card)

The type of Fb advert in this case would be 'reach' (meaning show this ad to as many people as possible) it might sound complicated,, it really isn't you could learn it in an hour or so.

That is a very low use of the voucher but it may not be a good measure. It may well have got other business which did not use the voucher.

If I were setting up a restaurant, I would certainly leaflet the locality.

I think leafleting for a local business is a very good way to promote the business. Hard to measure.

It depends on the service you are offering. I live in a new build estate and our phase has a WhatsApp group. People are constantly looking for recommendations for painters/electricians/cleaners etc. as most of us are relatively new to the area. I always thought that if I had a trade I would be into new estates trying to build a reputation as soon as people moved in. I may even offer special deals to new builds just to get my foot in the door.

This is equally effective for restaurants / take aways in the area as most people who moved in are young families with a bit of disposable income wanting to try somewhere new every now and again.

As a teen I delivered leaflets for an Indian takeaway. 1st week we were told to deliver to a big new estate 4 miles from the restaurant and they got a fantastic response. The next week we were told to deliver to a big established estate a few hundred yards from the restaurant and the owners accused us of not delivering the leaflets because they had absolutely no response. I think some homes that live in large catchment areas that are prone to mass leaflet delivery just ignore them where as new builds in areas where amenities are not as substantial take more notice.

I personally hate leaflets and have a no junk mail notice on my post box. Sometimes the leaflet company's ignore it and it so irritates me there is no way I even read the leaflet as I dump it in my recycle bin.
