Are infra-red heaters any good?

I'm converting a small barn into an office. While researching heating options I came across infra-red heaters.

These heaters seemingly heat objects in the room (walls, furniture, people) rather than heating the air and as such are considered to be particularly suitable for old stone-walled buildings. They're also more expensive to buy than conventional electric heaters.

This type of heating seems to be new to Ireland. Just wondering if anyone has experience of infra-red heaters and how they perform...

Would be best to post this on the Boards.ie construction forum, will pick up replies there as this site is mainly about money topics.

I don't think they are that new, my local church (not that I am there that often) have them for a good number of years. Seem to work well, I go to an anniversary mass every Feb 6th and they do keep you toasty warm without having to heat the whole church.

Thanks Monbretia. I only read about them earlier this year and had never seen them before. Yours is another positive review.

You're right Nordkapp. I was also thinking about the heaters in terms of cost (they're more expensive than 'conventional' heaters) but didn't make that clear. I'll try Boards.
