Can anyone confirm that as long as I don't agree to anything offered over the phone that the contract is now a monthly one which can be cancelled in the normal way. Or do they atomatically put you on a new one year contract.

Do you have any of the T&Cs of the original contract available? From what I see on their site, after the 12 month contract period ends, you just need to give a month's written notice to terminate.

When my yearly contract ends with Virgin, I an automatically reverted back on to the expensive open market price until I renegotiate a new price plan. You will see an increase in your monthly bills.

If your contact ends, why do you have to give a months notice? Would you not just have to pay pro rata.

In theory you just have to pay pro rata but VM are famous for charging you another month and then making it awkward to get your money back. Various discussions about it on boards.ie.

To the OP: yes, you are on a month-to-month arrangement, but watch out for any future letters in the post that lock you into a contract by default unless you opt out. Also, even if you decide it's right for you don't acquiesce to any new contract unless you get some sort of discount. Having you on contract is valuable to VM but they will try to play games.

They recently told me I'd be entering a new 12 month contract just by cancelling my TV subscription! After telling them to get knotted I got my broadband speed doubled and a 50% price discount for a period which, in fairness, was no more than they were offering new customers so I wasn't exactly being outrageous.

Because that's all covered in the agreement you have to sign up to at the start. It's a 12 month contract period with an ongoing rolling monthly contract afterwards. I don't think any providers operating here will cut you off once the initial contract period is over.

Just to clarify, I was only concerned with whether they automatically sign you up for another year by default but I'm guessing it just rolls to a monthly. Was looking for confirmation of this from experience.

give them a shout and tell them you are thinking of moving to another provider

Even if you aren't you should be able to blag a deal.
