Airport Security Delays

There seems to be a new delay at European airports: Europe: EU border checks causing extra long security lines; passengers report missing flights. If you miss your flight due to those delays, who pays to get you home? Thanks.

It is your responsibility to arrive in the airport allowing sufficient time to clear security. You miss your flight due to not arriving in time, you pay. Warnings were issues about the potential for longer wait times when the new legislation came in back in March affecting 'third-country' nationals entering the Schengen Zone.

I always arrive early, but what happens if your delay is say, 3hrs through no fault of your own is my question.

That particular legislation allows them to streamline the process if there are considerable delays. In practice, people with upcoming flights are allowed skip queues.

But ultimately, in terms of consumer rights, there is no recourse available if you do miss a flight due to delays in security. Your airline is not responsible for security delays, and I doubt you would have any success pursuing the airport or security authorities.

How does the fast track work at Dublin airport? Do all airports operate a fast track service such as Malaga, Faro etc. If so do you purchase these ahead of travelling or can you just turn up at Malaga airport and pay to fast track through security?

You must book online more than 2 hours in advance of the time you wish to enter the security queue. That €6 - €8 entitles you to enter the priority queue at the initial security screening area, they claim to get you through security in 10 minutes. You'll get a 10% off voucher for Loop shopping.

You'll need to check each airport individually. Malaga's offering is likely of little use.

The Fast Track can be incredibly frustrating when you go through to find that they've let non-Fast Trackers into the queue.

If you have a business credit card with Bank of Ireland request an upgrade to a gold card and you get automatic Gold Circle/AerClub membership. That gives you security fast track, priority boarding and lounge access when travelling with Aer Lingus.

The problem, afaik, is not the actual baggage security check though, it's when they check your passports. Dublin airport does not check your passport when departing (for eu) but most other airports do. In Malaga they don't check your passport till you go to your specific gate and if you decide to do airport shopping or have a meal prior to it you could be in trouble. Same for most other EU countries but they may have the passport check a little nearer to the security gates.
