Is there an agreed upon way of exchanging money without paying enormous fees? Obviously there's plenty of options for digital transfers. But how about cash? Is my best option still going to a bank?

Few places want cash theses days, so it's probably one of the main retail banks, or a bureau de change (don't expect competitivs exchange rates).

You could hold on to it, take a trip up North some day and buy some cheap groceries, or even alcohol. Newry is less than 90 minutes drive from Dublin, for example.

depends on the amounts. Are you talking a few quid, or thousands? I find the best is currencyfair, but I cannot advertise them. I have no interest in them, save that I use them for EUR/STG conversions from time to time. Banks don't want cash, as they fear money laundering. Could you have the person in UK send to currencyfair or revoult?

I wouldn't have thought that even banks or bureaux de change would charge anything close to 10% in margins and fees on foreign exchange transactions?
