I will turn 70 years shortly. I will apply for a medical card. Looking at the form to be completed I see that both my doctor and my wife's doctor have to complete a section of the form, to confirm that they will accept me as a patient under the medical card scheme.

Has anyone's doctor charged a fee to complete this form?

I won't turn 70 until next month. Can I submit the form early?

I rang the department that deals with medical cards today to ask a few questions and there was nobody available to answer any questions. When I wanted to leave a message I was told that their mail box was full and I was disconnected.

In most cases that I've come across the GP's secretary will arrange to have the form signed and stamped for you without charge.

You can submit the form early if you wish, but it will probably be returned to you as they won't process it until you actually turn 70 and are eligible for the scheme.

Finally got through on the phone. I was told that all their systems are down and they cannot help. To ring back later. When I said that I just had a simple question to ask....I was told that all our systems are down and I cannot help....

Try calling the Citizens Information Service (Monday to Friday 9am to 8pm) They are always very helpful and offer excellent and clear Info

Why didn't you ring your GP? As can be seen different GPs act differently, the Department won't know this, only your GP will.

I think the person asking the question just wanted to get a "feel" for the various fees charged by doctors. You make it sound as if they did something wrong asking the question here.

Just a comment.

Everybody over 70 is automatically entitled to a GP-Visit card, there is no means-test.

People over 70 can apply for a full medical card, and the means-test for over 70s is more generous than the means-test for people under 70.

The time taken to ask us, plus ringing the Department would be more than ringing the only people who can provide the answer. If the answer is we charge, then ask us if it's "normal" and then move doctors or not.

The question asked was "has anyone's doctor charged a fee" to complete this form.

This was directed at the members of Askaboutmoney. I don't know how ringing the Department would have answered this question?
