Problems with secondary card on a credit card account

I have a joint current account with the Ulster Bank. I also have a credit card with the Ulster Bank. The credit card account has my wife as the principal account holder and I also have a secondary card linked to the account.

We have both received a letter, stating that under new rules, there cannot be a second card linked to this account. The second card has to be scrapped before mid January next. I will no longer have a credit card as a result.

We do not use online banking. We have a current account with cheque book, and debit cards. We can manage fine with these.

My wife has been told that she needs to download an app so she can be contacted if she makes an online purchase. A new security feature.
She does not want to download any app because it will be linked to our current account.

I always understood that a person's credit card account had nothing to do with a person's current account.

Has anyone out there got an Ulster Bank credit card without a current account and how will you cope with the new rules?
 
@SlugBreath i have the UB credit card and no longer have any current account with them. No link required as far as I know, but I do use their online banking.
 
Just catching up on this thread.
I've an AIB Platinum card, so cashback on all transactions (after the 1st 5K spend as far as I remember).
My wife is the 2nd card holder and we've no AIB current account. Card is cleared from our TSB current account every month.

We've received no notification that a 2nd card cannot be linked, so I guess it's specific to UB, and they are using it to force cardholders hands.

We have the AIB app on our phones and 2 factor authentication is set up (Just used it today for motor tax renewal on their site).

One wrinkle is that the cards are linked on the app. I once though I'd lost my card so went on the app to freeze it. It froze both cards. Luckily I (dumbass that I am) found it in another trousers, so no harm done. But it could be an issue if you were away and one card was stolen.

If your wife makes an online purchase do you both get an online text to one phone or to two phones? Do you have separate phone numbers linked to each separate card?

I wonder why Ulster Bank cannot have two phones linked separately to two cards?

I also got a letter and they seemed happy to recommend us to close our credit card account. When I contacted them by phone it was also suggested to me that I might like to close my account.

What a way to treat customers!

We have separate phones and separate apps. Whoever makes an on-line purchase gets the push notification. She is the named user on my account (in reality it's "our" account :) ). The cards have the same number but our own names on them. So everything appears to be separate on the apps except if you freeze the card, which freezes it on both apps.

Each app shows all transactions on the account.

As regards why UB cannot do this, maybe it serves their purpose not to. :rolleyes:
