Hi, would anyone have advice on the best/fastest charger for home usage for the Kona Electric Car?

Thanks

The fastest will be those with the highest kw rating.
Think of your kettle at home. A 2kw kettle will boil 1L of water faster than a 1kw kettle.

As for the best, I'm not aware of any sold through reputable dealers in Ireland which have reported quality issues to date, but it is a relatively young market.

If you intend doing the majority of your charging at home, is speed really the main priority? You'll get into the habit of charging overnight when you park at home. All chargers will fully charge your battery overnight.

The Kona has a large battery. Depending on your mileage, you may not need to charge every night. You'll get approx 400km from a single charge. Just don't use Sport Mode if you want to hit this figure!

Enjoy your Kona. It's a fun drive.

FWIW I have a couple of the 32Amp (7.2kW) versions of these - [broken link removed]. Very reasonably priced and reliable 2 years in!

make sure to apply for the grant before you buy anything!

PS. 7.2kW (32A) is the fastest the Kona can charge at home.

The grant has been abolished, as of this month I believe.

The recent Budget abolished the grant for companies purchasing EV's for staff. As far as i am aware, the grant for installing a Charge Point in your home was retained.

Oh really?! I didn't realise there was a grant for the actual charging point. Will look in to it. Thank you.

grant for home charger is only applicable to domestic applications as far as I know, companies can't claim the €600 grant, but can claim a deduction for the cost of the installation.

Typical Irish houses are not wired for Fast Charge Points.
You should be looking at something along the lines of Zappi if you have Solar PV or an Electric Shower as it has built in load sharing.

If you just want a plain and simple plug in and charge, then the EO Mini is discreet and modern and non intrusive. I'd get that one if I was buying a dumb charger tomorrow. I have the ESB ABL one 3 years now and all good.

You have to decide a few things :

Do you want tethered or non tethered (cable permantly attached to the charger or plug in/out).

They had an offer recently for supply and fit for €199 (obviously grant of 600 on top).

Thank you.

I would like a fast charge if possible. We don't have Solar PV or an electric shower. Am hoping for a tethered, however, if it appears invasive, then I'll go for non-tethered.

I'll check out the EO mini.

Why is the charging speed of such importance to you?
Assuming you are switching from traditional fuel and intend charging at home overnight, you will just get into the habit of plugging the car in when you arrive home from work. The car will be fully charged in the morning regardless of the type of charger you buy.
For me, the importance of fast charging applies only when you need to charge in a hurry e.g. at motorway service stations, shopping centres, etc

Ok. Yes, you are right. I am possibly focusing on something that is not very important. I just want to be sure I get the best one to suit. Thanks.
