looking for advice for basic laptop for college course (law). Lectures online and doing written assignments ... any recommendation.

Existing laptop is over 5 years old and did the job - but now broken unfortunately

Any good deal out there ?

If it were me and I was happy with my previous laptop I'd try to get the current version of it. Otherwise is sounds like any main brand laptop with an Intel i3 CPU and min. 4GB RAM would do . . then it's just what suits you best re weight, screen size & cost. Hard to go wrong really.

One of these maybe:

Thanks for that. Sorry for a basic question - is MS office or similar separate. I see on that website that you buy a licence for 1 year .., is this the modern way ?

You can still buy a single user licence for MS office, which is better value if you plan to get a few years out of your laptop.
There is also the Google version (google docs / sheets etc) and open office, both of which are good and free if cost is an issue.

Yeah, I'd go for a single user licence (student version maybe) over a subscription . . although I just use LibreOffice which is free and can 'open' and 'save as' MS Office file formats.

Bought this one -
Lenovo Ideapad 320 - €370...
Good service and genuine advice from the sales rep... well done Powercity...

Certainly no need to spend on Microsoft Office.

I use OpenOffice extensively and love it. I use text document, spreadsheets and presentations. It's free.
I use Google docs occasionally and so far so good. Excellent for sharing.

I must check out LibreOffice, though I doubt I will move from OpenOffice.

Resurrecting this thread, folks, in the hope that I can get an up to date recommendation. I need two laptops as Christmas gifts - one for a kid in 5th year and one for a kid in his second year of college.
Neither are required to be v high spec / tech. College course is not related to design / animation etc. It's mainly for homework assignments, googling, word / excel docs and email. Budget is tight at €350 a piece (if I could spend less I'd like to and give them the cash balance).
I think both get word and excel licence access via their school / college.

Wondering if there's any lingering Black Friday offers or upcoming Cyber Monday opportunities.

Thanks in advance.

For that type of usage a Chromebook would be suitable. I recently purchased one from lenovo.com for my Dad who just needs docs/spreadsheets/surfing. It uses the google docs / sheets / etc so doesn't need office but it can open office docs so is compatible. The one I got for my Dad was the Chromebook S330 @ €225 but with a 10% discount. A couple of days later there was a 15% discount. There are usually some discount codes floating around at this time of year so worth keeping an eye out.

I agree with the recommendation for a Chromebook.
Good value here plus 10 euro discount 10FORYOU.

+1 - and there are a range so you can go from the fairly cheap to a bit more pricy. Would suggest getting enough "RAM" (4G I suspect - others may have views).

Advantage of Chromebooks is security. They will always be patched and up to date. Don't need to worry about downloading updates as you might with a Windows machine
