Hi,
We are a small business and thinking of getting 1 or 2 small pool cars to help staff get around to clients.

How does the insurance work and premium calculated for a setup like this?

Does each potential user of the vehicle need to have their details submitted and the premium based on their profile or is it a general open insurance policy based on the size and number of cars?

Thanks in advance for any insight

you should go to your broker. Policy in name of business with either open driving or named driver basis. I would suggest former as staff may change. There would be age limits, such as 25-70; all would need full licences, that employer must inspect to ensure that they are clean and any prior convictions would need to be disclosed. You'll be starting out expensive as the business will not have any NCB.

Out of curiosity, do motor insurers underwrite groups of company cars on a fleet basis any more ?
If so, how does that compare cost wise as against a commercial motor policy for a few company cars ?

yes of course they do. But your language confuses me when you say "a" commercial motor policy for "a few" company cars.

for the last while fleet insurers have only been considering established fleets with claims history. So if you were a new company and you went out and bought 3 or 4 cars or vans you had to go off and get single policies in the name of the company. Normally it would prove hard as the company would not have a no claims bonus. The market is also narrower as to the number of insurers who will write a policy for a vehicle in the name of a limited company.

So in the main you could pick up a fleet polic with 4 vehicles depending on claim history for about 3 to 3.5k where you would probably be paying 1,500 for insurance for one vehicle in a company names (based on a passenger vehicle and not commercial vehicle with no seats in rear).

I was thinking of a commercial motor insurance policy with several vehicles covered under it as distinct from a fleet basis.

Generally speaking most insurers won't write multiple vehicles on one policy as it offers no adminstration advantages. From a broker perspective you may get two on a policy. If you had several vehicles you would be losing out by not availing of a fleet product. Depending on the vehicle numbers you could get a cheaper rate per unit than an individual policy.
