Hi.
Long storey short i won my WRC hearing last May2019. It was unfair dismissal from a primary school where i worked for 11 yrs.
Since, ive been trying to get my full reference which was discussed at the WRC hearing.
Recently i received it after i registered a letter to the Chairman BOM.
He got the principal to acknowledge it.
It was a minimal reference.
I want a full reference to acknowledge the 11 yrs service. One im entitled to.
I sent back a registeted letter to the Chairman BOM over a week ago and no word back.
Any suggestions what i should do.

Yes. I was to get a full reference. What i got edventually was basically nothing on paper.

Written references are generally very short these days. Employers tend to simply list the dates the person was in employment. In an education setting verbal references are the only ones that count.

As Threadser says, references are very factual these days. I would have expected at the very least that the reference would have detailed your length of service within the school.

Just remember, the BOM and the Chairperson of the Board are generally inexperienced with the workings of employment laws and the following of such procedures.

Ive applied for 6 school secretary jobs. Great interview. Unsuccessful. I look for feed vack and they wont reply.
Hard not to think my reference by phone is not a great one

Unfortunately, the primary school network is very small. Principals talk to Principals and Chairpersons talk to Chairpersons.

A reference isn't worth the paper it's written on. People read between the lines. They read (infer from) what isn't there and people also talk to eachother.

Re. feedback .... with regards to teacher/principal interviews:

"A candidate’s own marking sheets should be made available on request, after the recruitment process is complete."

I would think that similar should be available to candidates applying for the post of secretary within a school.

Interview boards may offer feedback but they are not obliged to provide it. See if you can get your hands on your own marking sheet for any interview you were unsuccessful with. Be aware that you may be time limited in getting access to them. GDPR might also be a route to look at to see what information schools and boards are holding on you.

Edit: It looks like the recommendation for the retention of a record of criteria for short listing and notes/marks from interviews is a period of 18 months (for teacher interviews).

Your mother's advice remains good - if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all.
