Can a council nominate only one person for President?

Can a council only nominate one person for the Presidency? Or can the same council give the nod to a few different candidates for the craic?
 
I wonder how this works.

When I heard that FG (and FF?) had told their councillors not to vote for anyone, I assumed that would mean that the council would not be able to nominate anyone.

But if FG councillors abstain, then the other councillors get to make the choice?

So FF in Cork tried to nominate the soft FF candidate Sean Gallagher. When that did not work , they supported the no-hoper Joan Freeman.

That was a some stroke to impede Gallagher so, I didn't pick up on that on RTE last night.

Looking back at 2011, these councils backed Gallagher:
* Cork City, Clare, Leitrim, Meath

Meath has already backed Duffy.

Mary Davis was backed by 13 councils, so you wouldn't want to read too much in council support v electoral votes.

Sinn Fein have 23 TDs so won't need to go down the council route.

So they obviously can nominate one only.

How is the poll conducted?

If 5 candidates look for the nomination?

Can a councillor vote against a candidate?

I asked a local Councillor, Dermot Lacey, how it works and this was his reply:

Hi Brendan,

We just agreed this yesterday:


All candidates will be invited to make their case and given 5 minutes each at meeting of Council on the 13th September.

For any nominee to get the nomination a motion will have to be proposed by a Cllr and seconded by a Cllr

That Dublin City Council agrees to nominate candidate x

If that motion gets a majority the candidate will be nominated and if not they wont. Only one candidate can be nominated.

I was making a general point about the nomination. Not just Dublin City Council but on other councils they could vote against all candidates.

But I think that the councillors like to be the centre of attention so most councils will nominate someone.

It seems that FG told their members not to nominate or support other candidates. That is pointless really. They should have told them to vote against other candidates.

SEAN GALLAGHER HAS secured his first nomination from a local authority.
Roscommon County Council voted for Gallagher as their preferred candidate, with 10 councillors voting for the businessman, one councillor abstained and one was absent.
Journalist Gemma O’Doherty received two votes and independent senator Joan Freeman received three votes.

Each local authority can only endorse one candidate.
Councils in Wexford, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Fingal, Wicklow, Westmeath, Offaly and Galway city are due to vote to endorse candidates later today.
 
So Gallagher and Freeman are in, Gallagher has withdrawn his name from nomination from other councils, so doesn't seem to be trying to impede any other candidates from nomination.
 
That's probably because Gallagher feels that the more candidates in the race the more votes might be taken from Higgins - he must feel confidant in getting a significant portion of the FF vote.

It will be interesting I suspect a significant amount of people who voted for FF in the last general election will be moving over to FG at the next general election the penny has dropped with quite a few former die in the wool FF supporters who now see FG doing the things they were expecting FF to do when in office but never got round to doing ,

The time FF spent when in Government in the Galway tent including Michael looking after people who never cared about the party , they people who really cared about the party were shafted ,

FG now under Leo are beginning to look after the long term interest of former and present FF supporters better than FF ever did,

It will be interesting to see how the vote I expect people will be sending a message to Michael which will hurt Gallagher,

There will be people who voted for FF in the last general election who would vote for anyone but Gallagher when a FF supporter moves away from FF now it is for good ,

They now have another party who are doing the things the expected FF to do but did not bother doing,

It will be no 1 to FG, it will be hard for FF to do anything about it when they turned down the chance to go into Government,

FG are now looking after FF supporters better than FF have for the last 40 years,,
