1000 euros grant a year for granparents for minding there grandkids what about those of us That have no granparents. it's the sillyiest thing I have heard and tells a lot about our government and the way they are thinking I am worried, very worried.

It is wild stuff alright.

OAPs vote though!

I saw stats recently around average OAP wealth relative to average non-OAP wealth; the ratio was quite extraordinary.

Would love if grandparents could help with my kids. Trouble is they live 50 miles away, are too busy and visit rarely. What happens to many families in same boat ? What happens if grandparents are too ill to mind kids ? What happens if they are already deceased ? Or if they don't want to mind kids but claim the 'self declared' grant anyway ? What a genius idea from the government ! How long did it take to come up with this plan ? Who's idea was it ? It might help some families but will blatently discriminate against many others. Are FG gearing up for an election ..? Hope they can muster up some better vote getting ideas than this one.

Great! Next year, as our grandchildren are turned over to us daily we'll receive a once-a-year payment o €1000.00 from the government. I'm wondering will the other set of grandparents want the grand too as they have the kids for around 10 hours weely?

Mrs Lep is calculating how this payment will affect our lives and is recommending counselling that the windfall won't have an adverse consequence on our life.

While not great, this is a good idea and the money can only get larger.

Pay people for minding their grandchildren, pay people for minding their own kids... it's a good job money grows on trees and nothing ever has to be costed.

You'd think we didn't owe €200 billion.
You'd think we weren't facing a pensions crisis that makes that €200 billion look like chicken feed.
You'd think we weren't facing into Brexit.
You'd think we weren't facing Trumps global trade wars and protectionism.
We are a small open economy. We have what is probably the worst value for money healthcare system in the developed world and a third level education system which is failing due to funding and other structural reasons (we don't really know how we are doing at primary or secondary level) and this is the best the Independent Alliance can come up with?! How cravenly populist can they be? If children voted Shane Ross would be outside the schools giving our sweets and campaigning to ban homework.

This a piece of Silly Season nonsense that will soon be forgotten about. The antics of the Independent Alliance would be comical but for the fact that they have influence at Cabinet.

I seen it in the papers yesterday, the first person to come into my mind was purple,What ever happened to purples best generation sure the don't expect taxpayers to pay and mind there children,;)

We should come up with a few idea's here to put forward. There should be a grant to celebrate the birth of a new citizen in the country. This new citizen will be a taxed from birth to death by the State so a grant to celebrate should at least be offered:cool:

The majority of the new citizens will be net recipients from the State.

I agree. We are nowhere near as selfish and reckless as your generation but we are also living off our children's generation; we have mortgaged their future.
When we both see millennials you should firstly apologies for your generation wrecking the country, I should apologies for my generation not taking responsibility for being stupid enough to borrow the money to make you guys rich and then we should both thank them for making it a more pluralistic and open place to live.

That is where you are wrong you are more selfish than the generation before and after you, your generation borrowed the money and your generation will shortly have to start paying it back, look at the Nation debt it was in the teen when I Was your age ,
Don't go thank the people born in the last 10 years most will not be staying to pay high taxes to keep your Generation ,The best Educated most will go I suspect you already know that

Stop being reckless and start putting a fund in place through the PRSI system to fund your generation into the future because nobody else will and time is running out,

We can't; we are too strapped paying for your generation.
Yes, my generation borrowed to buy the houses from your generation but when things blew up your generation were running the banks, running the construction companies, running the Central bank, Financial Regulators office, Running the Office of Director of Corporate Enforcement, running the Department of Finance, Running the Department of Justice, Running the running legal industry and the Courts, running the Government... running everything.
Who was bailed out? The depositors (your generation) and the Bondholders (your generation). Who was not touched by wage cuts in the form of pension Levies? Your generation. Your generation made every major decision and held every position of power. On a collective level you are responsible, through selfishness, greed and incompetence, for the crash and all you did was protect yourself from the consequences of your actions by using your children and grandchildren as a human shield. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

I did not see any 66 + working on building sites getting over 1 euro to lay each block,
Your generation messed up and are going to mess up again unless they take steps now to fund there future while they can,

No, they owned the construction company and the pension fund (your pension fund?) that was financing it and the bank that was financing the buyers and the companies and selling making the bricks. The set the policies that let to the boom and the crash.

You're not thinking big enough. You're looking at the foot soldier, not at the generals and politicians directing the armies.

There would be no wars if the foot solders did not turn up,The generals politicians are allowed to do what the like by your Generation sorry to say led by people like your good self,

Yep, my generation were fooled by our leaders (you generation). We have to accept that culpability.
Do you think that lets your generation off the hook?
If yours isn't the worst generation we have ever had then which is?

What are the generations being compared here (or is this just a private spat ) ?

Born in 1950s vs born in 1970s ? Retired vs still in paid employment ?

It's a curious dichotomy. Most of the roles referred to were being fulfilled by men in their 50s whereas David Drumm was in his early 40s. Are they all the same generation ?
