Looking for advice. I have been working on temp contract for over a year with very good appraisals. Job was made permanent and advertised both internally and externally. I applied, was interviewed but was unsuccessful and am being left go as my contract is up. Do I have any rights in this situation

Ok thanks. I was just checking as morale a bit low. I thought that if job became permanent. I would be converted if was doing a good job. Obviously not then. Oh and I was told that I did a very good interview.

I was told that I did a very good interview

That's a kicker. If you did such a good job ... well, the obvious next step is to offer you the permanent job.

Anyone saying 'you did a good interview' .... are a bit slow on the mechanics of what they said.

They're under no obligation whatsoever to offer you the role. All it takes for you not to get it is one external person with slightly better qualifications, experience or interview, or someone already working there with similar credentials. The company can also give the role to someone already in a permanent role there for a multitude of reasons from offering someone at a lower level a career growth / promotion opportunity to keeping someone whose team is being downsized or eliminated.

It' a bumer alright but the tables are slowly turning again to an emplyees market I am a firm believer in one door closes and another door opens good luck with your job hunting.

And the saga goes on..,was given a 3 month contract at the last minute in another team doing a lower level type job but with same pay. My question now is 'should I apply for a position that has come up in my previous team' i.e. basically a more or less same role as my old position? Seeing as I didn't succeed last time, I don't think there is much point and want to keep some shred of dignity. Any suggestions on how to approach this would be appreciated

What was the feedback the last time? If you did a good interview, have the basic qualifications for the job, like the company and have 3 more months experience under your belt, why not? This is where it is good to have feedback from the previous interview, but still not too late to get it.

Say for example you did not talk about how well you can do a job (I had this once, she spoke forever about the company she worked for but gave me no inkling as to what she actually did or how she got on at the job she currently had).

You need to be able to talk about the skills you have, what you enjoy doing, how you approach your work etc. Best of luck.

Thank you clamball for your positive reply. You have given me back some confidence that I had lost.

Hi there - You sound lovely. It also sounds like this company messed you about a bit. I can only imagine that after putting in a years hard work in the hopes of securing a permanent role this was a crap kick in the teeth.

With your attitude you'll be fine in the long term - Tough it out, don't let dubious HR policy/mechanics dent your confidence or sense of self-worth and best of luck to ya ;)
